APPLE has launched its much anticipated iPad 2, making the device available from next week within the United States.

Apple has thrown down the gauntlet to competitors who - in the main - have yet to deliver to stores their own tablet computers.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who has been on indefinite medical leave, unveiled the new iPad 2 in San Francisco.

Jobs walked on stage to a standing ovation, looking frail, wearing his signature black turtleneck, blue jeans and wire-rimmed glasses.

Jobs told the audience, "We've been working on this product for a while and I just didn't want to miss today."

The new iPad 2 has much of what was expected of it: A front and rear camera for taking photos and video chatting, an A5 dual processor for twice the CPU speed and 9X faster graphics speed.

The power consumption remains the same as the first A4 chip unit, giving the iPad 2 a 10-hour battery life.

Available for the first time in white, the unit is 1/3 thinner, down to 8.8mm from 13mm.

It's available from March 11 in the US, then March 25 in at least 26 other countries, including Australia.

New features include a HDMI output cable for connectivity with screens and televisions, and new magnetised Smart Cover protective cases that will not substantially add to the size or weight of the device.

A substantial upgrade of the iOS operating system - version 4.3 - will support the new computing power and gadgets that form the iPad 2, particularly focussed towards its video and multimedia abilities.

New apps have been announced, including iMovie editing software, updated AIrPlay and Apple TV software .

Jobs announced in January that he would take a third leave of absence to focus on his health.

In the last decade, Jobs, 56, has survived a rare but curable form of pancreatic cancer and undergone a liver transplant.

Chief operating officer Tim Cook has been running day-to-day operations.

For those who slam and hate Apple and call people who love Apple poducts dumb, here is why I buy Apple. I love the designs. I don't need a 12 core processor in an iPad although you can get the MacPro for that. Size and number of cores don't matter for the average user. I just want something that you switch on and it works. Apple use components to match the product. If you think the iPad is already outdated, you missed the point. If Apple wanted to, they could put the fastest and most powerful components into the iPad and it would most likely dazzel you because you have 12 cores in an iPad. You will however only get 1 hour use out of the Battery as a tradeoff. USB and SD card reader come as an extra. I have it and use it when I need it. The rest of the time it is packed away. But then again... it doesn't matter what I say here, you will still find something to complain about.

For those of you with considerable disposable income looking to upgrade. Please consider donating your current iPad to a disability agency or special education teacher. The iPad has proved to be a liberating device for so many children with disabilities. They could be put to such valuable use.

C&M;, LOL!! The only reason I'd buy an iPad2 is for the apps I already own for my iPhone. I use my phone to remotely control Cubase on my PC and have numerous things like guitar tuners, SPL meters and literally dozens of great music creation apps. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere near the number of audio utilities on Android based phones so I bought an iPhone 4. I would have preferred an HTC but I'm pretty happy, mainly due to the apps though.
