Bloopers cost Redbacks

SLOPPY South Australian fielding allowed Victoria to recover from early setbacks in the opening session of their Sheffield Shield match at the MCG on Thursday.

The Bushrangers were 2-92 at lunch, with acting captain Aaron Finch and Michael Hill putting on a 66-run unbroken stand, after coming together with the score at 2-26.

At the break, Finch was on 37 and Hill 30.

But SA, whose acting captain Dan Christian sent Victoria in on a green-tinged pitch, could have been much better-placed had they not dropped three catches, two of them very simple.

Christian was the first culprit, putting down opener Ryan Carters (on seven) at second slip in the game's fifth over, although that did not prove a costly miss, with Carters adding just one more run before Christian claimed his wicket himself, caught behind six overs later.

By that stage, fellow opener Chris Rogers (13) had also fallen, popping up a simple leg-side catch from a badly mistimed pull shot off the bowling of left-arm quick Gary Putland.

Finch and Hill looked scratchy early in their partnership and Hill was put down twice when he was on 23.

The first was an absolute sitter, when the left-hander spooned off-spinner Nathan Lyon to mid-on, where paceman Ben Edmondson fumbled the waist-high chance.

Third slip Cameron Borgas grassed a tougher chance three overs later, at third slip off Putland's bowling.

Finch survived a confident LBW shout off Christian in the last over of the session.

Teams: Victoria: Aaron Finch (capt), Ryan Carters, Steven Gilmour, Jayde Herrick, Michael Hill, Jon Holland, Glenn Maxwell, Rob Quiney, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Matthew Wade, Tom Stray (12th man).

South Australia: Dan Christian (capt), Aiden Blizzard, Cameron Borgas, Ben Edmondson, Daniel Harris, Nathan Lyon, Graham Manou, Tom Moffat, Gary Putland, Kane Richardson, James Smith, Cullen Bailey (12th man)
