"Every 6th of September the Independence of Swaziland is celebrated in the Somhlolo Stadium in Lobamba". Guests arrive, the new army and the traditional "Emabutfo" regiments march in, the King's wives and daughters take their place in the stadium and His Majesty King Sobhuza II arrives in a Landrover. The new "Gcina" regiment, youngsters that train in agricultural practices, put on a display and then the King, his regiments, wives and daughters perform the ancient war dance "iNqaba kaNqofula". After a solo praise dance by a visiting Zulu warrior King Sobhuza II rejoins his guests: King Moshoeshoe II of Lesotho and King Goodwill Zwelithini of Zululand. These scenes were recorded with an old 8 mm camera (without sound) in 1973; sound, including my commentary, was added later from tape recordings I had made in previous years and later filmed from a screen with an analogue video camera. The image and sound quality is therefore poor for which I apologise. The opening scenes are in my native Dutch (translated above). For (better quality) photos I took there go to worldpics.com.au

"Every year at the end of August girls march from the Royal Kraal of Lobamba to Mdutshane to cut reeds to repair the enclosures around the Queen mother's residence, after which the large Reed Dance follows". These scenes were recorded with an old 8 mm camera (without sound) in 1973; sound, including my commentary, was added later from tape recordings I had made in previous years and later filmed from a screen with an analogue video camera. Well, there is a lot to write but I will try my best to keep it reasonably short;), yeah right Cory says;). We are now in Durban after 2 weeks in South Africa, and we have seen a lot! We arrived in Cape Town on the 25th, and stayed 2 nights before flying north to Johannesburg to begin our southbound journey along the coast back to Cape Town within 30 days-yes, I know...a lot of land to cover, right? Yes-definitely a "crash course" of South Africa, but we both love it and want to come back-so we are not worried:). Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, and is absolutely beautiful. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and ex patriots to South Africa. As of 2007 the city had an estimated population of 3.5 million. We only spent a couple days there, but look forward to spending a few more at the end of our trip before flying back to Buenos Aires on the 24th. We were able to visit Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela spent 19 years as a political prisoner under Apartheid), explore the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, and finally eat food with some HEAT! We were ecstatic to see so many ethnic restaurants after being in Argentina for seven weeks with not very much variety in terms of ...

The nation, as well as its people, are named after the 19th century king Mswati II. The principle Swazi social unit remains the homestead. The traditional beehive hut is thatched with dry grass. In a polygamous homestead, each wife normally has her own huts and yard surrounded by reed fences for privacy. These comprise three structures mainly for sleeping, cooking and storage (brewing beer). The weather was still cloudy but warm. We drove from Mlawula, through Simunye and past Hlane, through Manzini and onto Mlilwane, which is situated in the Ezulwini Valley. We had heard about this camp last year but had never visited it; it is another Big Game Parks Camp. We were really surprised just how nice it was and the scenery is just stunning. This is another great camp for walking, and seeing birds and wildlife. When we got to reception one of the members of staff walked up to us. Petros was at Hlane last year and he remembered us, so we stopped to chat to him. He told us all about the walks and we decided to do the 1 hour walk that afternoon, we saw zebra, impala, nyala, warthogs, weavers and bee-eaters to name a few. An overland group pitched next to us but they were a small group of middle aged/elderly people and must admit they were quiet. That night we heard the drums as the Mlilwane staff performed for the visitors. Soon they will be hosting the annual dance contest for the 3 Big Game Parks staff from Hlane, Mkaya and Mlilwane to decide who gets the trophy this ...
