Glee beats Elvis Presley on Billboard chart

HIT TV musical "Glee" broke the record previously held by Elvis Presley for the most single entries on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, FOX announced.

The high school comedy now has 113 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, exceeding the 108 from Elvis, James Brown's 91, Blues pianist Ray Charles' 74, the 73 from Aretha Franklin and the 71 from The Beatles.

Having covered hit tracks from chart-toppers including Michael Jackson, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Madonna, the show's music releases have racked up more than 16 million song downloads since the show debuted in 2009.

Glee is broadcast on FOX Television which is owned by News Corp., the parent company of NewsCore.

Considering the Glee cast does not record any original tunes (they only cover big hits) this should not, and does not, count in my book. Comparing Glee with Elvis Presley or even The Wiggles for that matter is totally laughable!

What a load of rubbish - Elvis was one singer, one person, who many are involved in Glee? When they have one singer from Glee to break Elvis' record then it may be news worthy.

Society is deranged when they think this manufactured tripe is worthy of news let alone a standing in a legitimate list such as Billboard. Anyone who celebrates this deserves the sad life they have. Yes I have never watched the show but you don't need to in order to know they don't write original songs. That ANYONE could compare these cretons with the list of unmitigated superstars shown above is a crock of ..... Like comments before, lets pass judgement when these clowns a) write an original track and b) have it get on the chart and then follow it up with 108 more keeping the same singer the whole time! I won't hold my breath!!

Considering a Number 1 hit no longer needs a million or more sales, this is not a very impressive record. How many actual sales does Glee have? I'm betting its not in the hundreds of millions.

Elvis died in 1977, and it took this long for a group of 'cover artists' to break his record. Shows just how good Elvis was.

Elvis was not only the ultimate performer but his greatness is measured not only on his ability to comeback after his stint in the army and his 25 or so movies but its been over 30 years since his untimely death, and he is still being compared against. Now that tells you something! My boy, My Boy.....

I may be wrong but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the charts used to be measured just by actual sales of singles whereas now they are measured also by how often they are played on the radio, which is why Idol winners are guaranteed a number one song. Does anyone know if this is right? If so it hardly seems comparable.

They are a really talented bunch, but of course they are having the most hits - they only sing other artists past hits!

'Glee Cast' as an artist should not count; it's covers made by characters. Furthermore, Billboard must be condemned for allowing this 'artist' to be certified chart positions.

  • glee fan but not of this record Posted at 8:45 AM February 21, 2011

they should do some original material and see how they go. People will down load a song they loved in their youth it doesnt have to be by the original artist. the glee team are great but do need to set records of their own.

totally agree with John they are all covers, there's no unique style, By that standard local adelaide cover band Chunky Custard (who have been around for a long time) are the greatest band in the world

Maybe if the Glee crowd sung their own songs instead copying Elvis & others then it night be an achievement...
