The Xue Long, with some 100 Chinese scientists and researchers on board, is seen on its arrival at Kaohsiung port for a four-day visit to promote academic exchanges with the island, Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan. China's Antarctic research ship has made a port call in southern Taiwan in the latest sign of improved relations between the rivals. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949, but Beijing still regards the democratic island as part of its territory, and has threatened war if it moves to make its de facto independence permanent.
