Prior to the start of a court session, a bailiff removes shackles from prisoners accused of crimes against humanity and rape in Baraka, Congo  on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011. The commanding officer, Lt. Col. Kebibi Mutware, bottom right, faces the charges of crimes against humanity. A Congolese court sentenced the army colonel to 20 years in prison Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 convicting him of crimes against humanity in the highest-profile sexual violence case ever tried in this nation where thousands are brutally raped each year. The trial held in a torridly hot makeshift courtroom in the lakeside village of Baraka marks the first time a commanding officer has been tried for such a crime.

Lt. Col. Mutuare Daniel Kibibi exits a mobile military tribunal after being convicted of crimes against humanity in the town of Baraka, Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011. Ten of eleven accused solders were found guilty of crimes against humanity including Mutuare who was sentenced to twenty years in prison. Kibibi is the highest ranking Congolese army officer to have been convicted of crimes against humanity. Kibibi was sentenced to twenty years in prison.
