Ridge Racer Unbounded Announced
Ridge Racer is back in the form of Ridge Racer: Unbounded, heading to PC, PS3 and 360. Helsinki's Bugbear Entertainment is at the wheel of this one.

Breaking free from all the pussyfooting around tame circuits, politely bumping into rivals' fenders, RIDGE RACER UNBOUNDED has a new mantra – Drive, Destroy, Dominate – and it's one that's going to shake up the racing genre for good. It’s time to break not only the rules, but plenty of cars too. You think you've seen crashes? You've seen nothing. In RIDGE RACER UNBOUNDED your car is a high-octane wrecking ball.

Over 1.25 million moro... err, upstanding gamers (including myself) downloaded Duty Calls, a Call of Duty parody semi-game type dealio to ultimately advertise Bulletstorm. As a thank you for downloading Duty Calls, People Can Fly have released some wallpapers.
Cities in Motion "Tram" Trailer, Screenshots and Release Date
- 4 Comments
Cities in Motion will be hitting the streets on February 22, 2011. The public transport simulator from Paradox Interactive and Colossal Order features over 30 different types of public transport vehicles. I played the beta briefly and the game seems pretty hardcore. Might not be one for the super-casual sim players, but if you're all into trains and buses and stuff then you should check out the open beta demo, which is playable until February 18th.

The Next Rift Beta Event Announced
It seems like all of this Rift beta action could really work in favour towards the success of Trion Worlds' upcoming MMORPG. So far I've been hearing a lot of positive things about the game. Have you been playing the beta? Any thoughts? Planning on purchasing?

If you're curious about the game, you can still sign up for the beta, and pre-orders will also get a headstart period. The next beta event will be a six day open test called "Telara the Merciless", starting on February 15 at 10AM PST and running through to February 21. This test features two playable factions, the first 42 levels of the game, three PvP warfronts and more. Looks like they're really ramping things up for the March 1st release.

Some time ago Trion Worlds' promised a smooth launch void of bugs. They may actually be able to back that up as well.

APB Early Sneak Peek At "Third District"
The APB: Reloaded Blog has another lengthy update available from designer Zak "Qwentle" Littwin on how things could have been in APB. Before that article they give a tiny sneak peek at what will be the game's "Third District". The new district will be an asylum, and will feature a bunch of new game modes.

Bill Roper On How Flagship Sunk
In a new interview on Gamasutra, former Hellgate: London developer Bill Roper reflects back on the demise of Flagship Studios, mistakes made, community reaction to Hellgate and more. It's a good read. Here's an interesting bit on community backlash after the launch of Hellgate:

But the backlash, honestly, was staggering. And I think it was, to me, the level and the depth of the backlash. It wasn't just like, "Hey, I played this game, and I didn't like it. It sucked. I hate this game. This game is the worst thing ever." Okay, you didn't like the game and all that. But it got to the point where there were personal attacks on developers.

It seems like the layers, one is like, "Did you like the game or not?" You could say, "I think this game is horrible." Perfectly fine. "Hey, I think your company is crap because it makes bad games." Okay, you know, whatever.

But then I started to get... It got to this level where at one point, on our forums, at the same time... Kind of the backend of this all happening is I was actually going through a divorce at the same time, and somebody found that out and posted on the forums, you know, "Well, I'm sure that his wife is leaving him because he lied about the size of his penis like he lied to us." I'm like, "Oh my... Really? Really? This is where we've come."

And I don't know if it's just because we happened to strike a chord where people had such high expectations for the game... I mean, we had high expectations for the game. We didn't deliver on what people wanted.

And maybe, also at that time, that's just to where the internet -- I hate to use that broad-based term in quotes -- had gotten. Like, people love flaming. The whole thing is all -- they want controversy. They're going to say things. It's like, "Hey, you don't know who I really am. I can say whatever I want." You see it in the press now.

Raptr Releases DCUO Gamer Stats Analysis
Raptr, the social networking site for gamers that tracks its members' playing time, has published an analysis of their DC Universe Online statistics.

According to them, although DCUO did attract some players from the other superhero MMOs, City of Heroes and Champions Online, the top ten games that DCUO stole playtime from did not include these two. This was deduced from the games that DCUO players played before its release, and which games dropped in playtime the most after DCUO's launch.

Here's the list:

  1. World of Warcraft
  2. StarCraft 2
  3. Aion
  4. Battlefield Bad Company 2
  5. Mass Effect 2
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  7. Mafia 2
  8. Team Fortress 2
  9. Eve Online
  10. Warhammer Online

But they are quick to add that "while WoW was affected most, overall the dent is pretty minimal as the overall gameplay hours tracked for WoW week in/week out keeps it at the top of the charts."

My only interest in Superbowl Sunday centers around the kind of dip served at the party, who's performing at half time and what commercials are debuting. So here are my takes from this year's all-American event.

Fergie sounded like the song was one octave too high for her. There were no garment malfunctions. Everyone's raving about the VW Darth Vader commercial but in my book, it's a tie between Coca-Cola Siege (what was Deathwing doing in a Coke commercial?) and any of the Doritos ones. Ok except for the cringe-worthy one below.

How did you spend Superbowl Sunday?

SOE Announces Reduced Subscription Pricing For DC Universe Online
- 19 Comments
If you're a DC Universe Online "pioneer" then you will have the opportunity to lock-in your subscription at a promotional rate of $29.99 for 3 months. That's over 25% off the regular plan price of $41.99. If you snag the new rate then you'll be able to keep it for as long as you are actively subscribed to DCUO. The new rate will be available on February 8th. Fine print... You'll need lock in this rate prior to the end of the 30-day subscription included with your software purchase, or by March 1, 2011 (when the promotion ends), whichever comes first. Why? – because if your current subscription plan kicks in before you choose the Legend Plan, the $29.99 rate won't apply until after your currently selected plan ends.
Bummage, Chris Taylor's Kings and Castles On Hold
- 37 Comments
Big Download contacted Gas Powered Games to enquire about the status of Kings and Castles. We had been wondering about the RTS as well, since Chris Taylor's weekly video developer blogs had gone on hiatus some time ago. Gas Powered founder Chris Taylor replied that the Kings and Castles project is on hold for now, saying that he couldn't go into further detail just yet, and calling it a "timing" thing.
