People in the News: 'Hills' star turns to fiction writing

Lauren Conrad can add a new position to her résumé: author.

The 22-year-old star of MTV's nonfiction series "The Hills" will write a young-adult fiction book series for HarperCollins, the publisher announced Thursday. The three-book series will be titled "L.A. Candy" and will be loosely inspired by Conrad's transformation from teenager to reality TV star and fashion designer.

"I've always loved books that I could lose myself in, ones that would transport me to another place, but had characters I could relate to," Conrad said. "I'm so excited to have this opportunity to write books like that for other readers."

The first book in the series will be published next summer.

  • Rapper Snoop Dogg has been granted a visa to enter Australia for a concert tour, the immigration department announced Friday after finishing a full character assessment of the entertainer.

The department had earlier expressed concern about Snoop Dogg's criminal record but took into account the fact that he had traveled to Australia three times without incident.

"In making this decision, the department weighed his criminal convictions against his previous behavior while in Australia, recent conduct -- including charity work -- and any likely risk to the Australian community," the immigration department said in a statement.

The rapper's Australia tour with Ice Cube and BoneThugs-N-Harmony is due to kick off in October.

  • Laila Ali and her husband, former Chicago Bears receiver Curtis Conway, are new parents of a baby boy. Curtis Muhammad Conway Jr., the couple's first child, was born Aug. 26, Ali announced on her Web site Thursday. The boy is named after his father, and Ali's -- Muhammad Ali.

While Ali, 30, had planned to have a natural, home birth, "there were some surprises during labor that altered Laila's birth plan," her publicist, Thea Ellis, said in a statement.
