IDLE005 250x250 Review: Kowton She Dont Jack [IDLE005]After spending a few weeks watching the majority of my Twitter feed filling my screen with comments about how big this release sounded in the club it has fortunately made it’s way out of the dubplate bin and into the hands of the masses as vinyl and digital release. The latest release on Punch Drunk imprint “Idle Hands” sees Bristol based Kowton exploring the a minimal-influenced house vibe with the two tracks ‘She Don’t Jack’ and ‘Drunk on Sunday’

‘She Don’t Jack’ exists somewhere between Garage and house, the comparisons to Appleblim and Ramadanman’s ‘Void23′ seem somewhat appropriate. Although the track is not nearly as epic, perhaps due to the fact it’s not nearly as long, both seem to suggest a new movement in Bristol’s ever-evolving yet constantly influential sound. Extremely haunting, yet still dancefloor functional – a huge tune that was making noise online for obvious reasons. ‘Drunk On Sunday’ comes a bit more subdued than the previous, with a focus that is less on shuffling dance minded beats, a spare yet solid percussive beat carries the track’s rich bass sounds. Definite late-night stamina crew vibes on this one.

Bristol is clearly setting itself apart as one of the fore-runners of the house music sound with influences that clearly draw on the soulful / human aspects evident in the Detroit sound, however still maintaining a bleak vibe and garage influenced syncopations that are undeniably ‘un-American.’

Kowton – She Don’t Jack / Drunk On Sunday [IDLE005] is available from all finer vinyl / digital shops.

Update: Good friends mnmlssgs have recently tapped Kowton for their latest in the ssg special mix series, get the download from them here

Some might be surprised to find a mix from Reso on this site, given the breadth of most people’s knowledge of him is confined to his harder more aggressive sounds. Some of his newest bits that have been played from me show a diversity that I think few people realize or appreciate from him. To celebrate the launch of his new website, Reso has shared a mixtape with a stellar tracklist as well as a three track EP.

Highly recommend both of these, full tracklist for the mix beneath the fold.

HFT014aa 250x250 George FitzGerald Dont You (HFT014)HotFlush Two sets off it’s 2011 release schedule with a new single from previous contributor to the imprint George FitzGerald. With HotFlush’s various imprints contributing releases from FitzGerald, as well as similar minded artists Joy Orbison, Sepalcure, and forthcoming releases from Incyde, the label shows a strong focus for the melodic and soulful explorations of underground music.

FitzGerald brings back the signature sound he established through his HFT012 release. Expounding on a spacey garage influenced sound with requisite soulful vocal edits, ‘Don’t You’ further establishes his place in the regrettably named ‘post-dubstep’ movement. FitzGerald’s original is backed with an edit from Scuba’s firmly established SCB moniker, giving a floor-moving techno exploration of the original.

George FitzGerald – Don’t You (HFT014) will see release on 12″ and digital formats on 17-Jan 2011. Don’t be a dummy, bag this.

DSC07119 f Spotlight on AnticsOur first artist spotlight for 2011 features Belgian based producer / dj ‘Antics.’ I was tipped off to his sound through his collaborations with good common friends of ours ‘Subreachers.’ Recently I had a chance to sit down with Elvin to discuss music, and other miscellanea. He was also kind enough to submit an exciting mix exploring the deeper sounds of dubstep that we always try to push heavily on this site.

OBD II j1962 Nerd out on OBD II Car Data in iOSFor the few of you out there who are actually hypermiling, or for anybody who thinks that the information from Fuelly isn’t sufficient, Griffin Technologies has developed a Bluetooth enabled OBD-II adapter for tapping into that port sitting beneath your car that you likely forget exists except that one time a year you go to get your emission sticker renewed.

The device, named CarTrip,  connects to your automobile’s OBD-II port, which is in all cars made in the past 15 years or so – giving you a glimpse at fuel consumption, speed and acceleration information, as well as demystifying that nagging “Check Engine” light you’ve been seeing.

Whether you have a legitimate use for something like this, or am just a fan of useless statistics like myself, pretty cool stuff here.
