Carson Daly to host 'Idol' rival 'The Voice.' Will he be a Seacrest or a Dunkleman?

carson-daly-trl-finaleImage Credit: Scott Gries/MTVMy immediate guess? A Seacrest. Honestly, though Last Call with Carson Daly revamped itself last year to focus on musicians, it’s been far too long since the guy has hosted a music-centric show that airs when most of the viewing public is conscious. So I’m ecstatic to see that he’s landed himself a primetime gig as host of American Idol‘s NBC rival, The Voice, which searches for the next big recording artist. “Carson is the perfect choice to host this exciting new series owing to his credibility, popularity, and relevance in both the music world and social media,” said Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming and Production Paul Telegdy in a release. “As he has demonstrated on his late night show, Carson has the knack of recognizing new talent, which is a key component in The Voice.”

Cameron Diaz set for Shirley MacLaine's role in 'Gambit' remake. Savvy? Risky? Both?

Categories: Casting, Movies, This or That

Gambit-REMAKEImage Credit: Travis Jourdain/PR Photos; Everett CollectionCameron Diaz is set to star in the Gambit remake, in a role made famous by Shirley MacLaine. Now before you go racing off to grab your pitchforks (as we all do whenever any contemporary actress takes on a role previously owned by a legend), let’s think of the reasons that this could actually pay off for audiences — and for Diaz herself. Though it’s been a long while since a Cameron Diaz vehicle has reached bona fide hit status (about eight years, when she headlined Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle — and, no, the Shrek films don’t count), Diaz could nudge her way into that commercial-critical success sweet spot with the Coen Brothers-scripted Gambit, in which she plays a Texan steer roper who helps a robber (played by Colin Firth) enact a crime. Let’s look back at the last part of that sentence: Signing on to star alongside this year’s (favored) Oscar winner in a film scripted by an Academy and audience favorite? There are definitely dumber things she can do. Like, say, The Holiday(Read full post)

Tyler Perry in, Idris Elba out of Alex Cross reboot: Producer explains why -- EXCLUSIVE

Tyler-Perry-Idris-ElbaImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR Photos; Charles Norfleet/PR PhotosLast August, when news broke that The Wire‘s Idris Elba was to follow in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman (Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider) and reboot the James Patterson detective character Alex Cross on the big screen, we were psyched — and this was before we’d seen his Golden Globe-nominated turn as a detective in the miniseries Luther. EW chatted with Elba last October about the film, which was to then have been directed by David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, Pitch Black), and all he would reveal was that the script was “phenomenal” and if he could pick his dream costar/nemesis, it’d be Joaquin Phoenix. So cut to the news today that cameras will be rolling this June on I, Alex Cross with Tyler Perry in the titular role and director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious and xXx) at the helm. What happened?  (Read full post)

'HIMYM': Neil Patrick Harris tweets Katy Perry episode promos. This looks promising...

Earlier this month, we asked you how you think How I Met Your Mother guest star Katy Perry would compare to the show’s other seemingly endless supply of guest stars. And, based on the promos for the episode starring the “California Gurls” singer — which became available yesterday after Neil Patrick Harris tweeted them: “CBS just emailed me promos for the Katy Perry ep of HIMYM. Not sure if I’m supposed to tweet ‘emyet. Oops.” — she’ll rank somewhere between Wayne Brady and Britney Spears. (HIMYM fans know where on the spectrum those two fall.) Unlike some of the CBS sitcom’s guest stars, Perry, I’ve always felt, has great comedic timing (which I’m sure was bolstered by marrying a certain British comedian). Just watch her fluster Ann Curry on Today (at about 1:50) earlier this summer. As for the promos, watch them here. And, no, she’s not the mother.

Anyone else think Perry, from certain angles, looks like a brunette twin of The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco?

Sorry Bunny, there's no 'Big Lebowski' sequel

Tara Reid is a tease. Two weeks ago, she told press at Charmaine Blakes’ 1st Annual Golden Globe Viewing Party to Help Eliminate Child Trafficking that she’d be shooting The Big Lebowski 2 — this year. Holy Little Lebowski Urban Achievers! A Big Lebowski sequel! I’d sever my own toe for another trip to Dude-land. But was Bunny simply being fatuous? According to a spokesperson for the Coen brothers, who would probably know such things, there is no Big Lebowski 2 in the works. Reid’s rep writes to EW, “She heard Jeff Bridges say that he wanted to make Big Lebowski 2 and have all the original cast members in it, so she may have misspoke, thinking that included her based on what Jeff said.” Sheesh, this is the kind of bongled conclusion that will get you tangled with a bunch of nihilists. 'Monsters' DVD Giveaway

Categories: Giveaways, Sci-Fi

MonstersSix years ago, alien life forms hitched a ride to Earth on a NASA space probe that crash-landed in Mexico. Before long, a wall spanning the Mexican-American border would be the U.S.’s only protection against invasion.

That’s the premise of Monsters, a sci-fi flick about real illegal aliens — think District 9, but made by a Brit and set in North America — that manages to do a lot despite its tiny budget of $500,000.

Today, the little film that could is out on DVD — and to celebrate its release, EW is giving away 10 copies of Monsters. (You’ll have to provide your own gas masks, unfortunately.) The discs are courtesy of Magnolia and are available while supplies last.

James Franco's battle against the fabric of reality continues with a self-reflexive college course

James-FrancoImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosSometimes it seems like James Franco is juggling a number of projects that is approaching infinity. Like a undefeatable hydra of productivity, each time we write about a new film, TV show, art project, book, class, mustache, soap opera, underwater re-enactment of the third season finale of Dynasty, James Franco look-a-like contest, or conjoined-twin separation surgery he’s involved in, two more career aspirations spring up to take its place. It’s reached the point that even posts about how many posts there are about how many projects Franco has are piling up like PhD coursework. You win, James: We’re meta-exhausted.

His latest venture, according to Movieline, is a class at Columbia College Hollywood titled Master Class: Editing James Franco… with James Franco, in which 12 lucky students will build a half-hour documentary about Franco, from footage provided by Franco, and under the occasional supervision of Franco. GLAAD slams 'SNL' sketch for being transphobic

Saturday Night Live has come under fire for its last week’s “Estro-Maxx” mock commercial, which GLAAD says was a “dangerous and blatantly anti-transgender segment… the punch line of which was the lives of countless transgender people across the country.” NBC didn’t respond to our request for comment. ABC Family announces three new shows, and its love for 'Caroline in the City'

Categories: Television

Nine-LivesImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABC Family; Angela Weiss/Getty ImagesYou know you’re getting old when the casting you’re most excited about on an ABC Family series is the MOM. But still, it’s Caroline in the City‘s Amy Pietz, people. She’s co-starring in The Nine Lives of Chloe King (pictured), based on the book series by Celia Thomson. She’s a single mother whose teen daughter Chloe (The Gates‘ Skyler Samuels) is looking forward to celebrating her birthday — “until she starts developing heightened abilities and discovers she’s being pursued by a mysterious figure,” the synopsis says. “Chloe soon learns she’s part of an ancient race which has been hunted by human assassins for millennia — and that she may be their only hope for ultimate survival.” I’ve never read these books, but in my mind, Pietz is Lorelai Gilmore meets Joyce Summers.

ABC Family execs must be serious Caroline in the City fans, because Lea Thompson plays a mom in the other hour drama going to series, Switched at Birth. (Read full post)

Clip du jour: Interpretive dance!

Interpretive dance just got a little more literal, thanks to the game “Interpretive Dance” on the new BBC 2 show Fast and Loose. In it, comedian David Armand acts out the lyrics to a pop song, and people have to guess what he’s miming. Dorky, amazing, hilarious, British — I’m gonna go buy a scratch-off, because today is my lucky day. (Read full post)
