Blogs about: Music

Trance. Rock. CountryJazz. Classical. Latin. One woman’s noise is another woman’s music. Once upon a time, we went to record stores to sift for new artists or albums. Now we click our mouses on a “play” button — over and over — until we find something we like. Then, we plug portable music players into computers, load ‘em up with tunes, and off we go (or we stay at our desk, headphones on, drowning out office noise). The way we listen to music may have radically changed in the last decade, but the song remains the same: We’re melodic creatures, responding emotionally and physically to the lull of a siren’s heartache or the strum of a guitar.

The Harlem Chamber Players Celebrates Black History Month

On Sunday February 27th at 3:00PM, The Harlem Chamber Players will celebrate Black History Month with an exciting and wide-ranging program of works, performed by the group’s extraordinary roster of artists. The works include Valerie Coleman’s Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet. Ms. Coleman infuses her contemporary orchestration with jazz, Afro-Cuban traditions, distinct African sonorities, and her own African-American heritage. She is best known for the wind quintet composition Umoja, which was listed by Chamber Music America as one of the 101 Great American Works. “We are very delighted to perform this work and believe we will engage the audience even more when we follow it with Paquito D’Rivera’s Alborada and Son from his Aires Tropicales” said Liz Player, founder of The Harlem Chamber Players. “We believe this kind of cultural variety and sensibility is exciting for our audiences”. No celebration of Black History would be complete without a reading from the pen of the great Africa

The winter of our discontent.
the indie lumberjack.

holy eff. so…my bad guys. three months really got away from me and i’m really sorry to the like…nine of you that check my blog daily. i did a lot over the course of the time i was gone, i promise. i got really depressed: yeah…i was super depressed for a good two months or so, but i’m back to normal now so life is looking up again. i’m really stoked for this semester and all the cool things that are going on. got promoted at gamestop: i have keys now and get to make basic decisions about people’s work days. woo! and i’m responsible for dealing with douche-bag customers when they come in with their panties in a bunch. yay! almost failed my entire fall semester: this one i’m a little less proud of. i pretty much didn’t go to any of my classes and wasted a lot of time and money. i slept a lot. moped around a lot. occasionally i’d make an appearance for exams and papers, but other than that, i was pretty much a ghost. got an

Google Demo Slam: "Instant Elements" by Whirled to Tom Lehrer's "Elements"
Otterman speaks...

The song they used in the Google Slam above is by Tom Lehrer, satirist extraordinaire, sung to “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.” a song from Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”. Here he is with come cold war humour; watch his expression when he sings.

Bad Pop Song of the week (1-31-11)
Rant City

Welcome citizens, In this inaugural rant, we’re going to take a listen to a current BAD Pop Song. And maybe I’m blowing my wad with this first song, but I can’t let the pain remain in my brain any longer. Ke$ha – “Tik Tok” Oh… My… Christ. Where the hell do I begin? First off, SHE HAS A DAMN DOLLAR SIGN IN HER NAME!!! That right there automatically disqualifies this from being a good song. Who came up with that idea? Her Pimp? Excuse me… “Legitimate Businessman”. But I know… her stupid name has nothing to do with the song. Let’s examine some of these beautiful lyrics: Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy (Hey, what up girl?) Grab my glasses, I’m out the door, I’m gonna hit this city (Lets go) Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack ‘Cause when I leave for the night, I ain’t coming back Ugh. I’ve already puked twice at this point. What does P. Diddy feel like in

Circa survive - 'in fear and faith'
elementary theft

what i say: i saw this band first in 2006, shortly after i’d joined w.c.u.r., the college radio station at west chester university.  i distinctly remember the show at the t.l.a., and it was one of the first local acts that i’d seen.  i greatly enjoyed it, and this song in particular gave me some chills i cherish. anyway, this one is from juturna, which apparently was inspired by ‘eternal sunshine of the spotless mind’.  ok, it was definitely inspired by it.  i think that’s a really good movie, and i remember getting carried away by it when i first saw it.  anyway – circa survive. why it’s neat: hmm…  i don’t know if i’m really qualified enough to talk about the actual musicianship behind the song (always a dicey thing to do.  no matter what you say, someone is going to feel strongly that your taste is bullshit), but i can talk about what it evokes.  this is definitely a blue song, but it’s a strong one, particularly for

The Welcome Concerto
Liquid Cloud Eleven

I live in a red barn converted cottage. Nestled against a hillside in the country, my home is surrounded by massive trees and overgrown shrubbery, a testimony to the fact that seasons have changed and my aversion of gardening has not. I grew up as a regular visitor in this home, spending long afternoons with my beloved grandparents who were the tenants at the time. Ten years ago, when my grandfather served in his self-appointed role as “Chief Gardener”, this “barn” as he often called it, boasted some of the finest gardens one could behold. My grandmother was ever the elegant hostess, producing inside the “cottage” as she liked to call it, a delightful counterpart to my grandfather’s outdoor masterpiece. With seemingly no effort, she could transform the antique pine table into a spread fit for royalty, placing platters of delicious fare amidst elegant place settings, candles and flowers. Throughout the years, I watched my grandmother master the art of entertaining, performing her role t
