It's time to talk Oscars!
In 2008, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight - praised by critics and audiences alike - was denied a shot at the top gong leading to a flurry of outrage online and a dip in the all important television ratings.
So the following year, in bid to revitalise interest in the awards, the best picture race was expanded to include 10 nominees, not five, allowing audience favourites Avatar and District 9 to be recognised alongside little-seen indie productions The Hurt Locker and Precious.
This year the tradition continues, and nominations are due to be annouced at 12:30am Wednesday Sydney time.
Here's my picks for the 10 films most likely to score a nod:
The Social Network, The King's Speech, The Fighter, Inception, Black Swan, True Grit, Toy Story 3, The Kids Are All Right, The Town and Winter's Bone.
*I'd love to subsitute Winter's Bone for Australian production Animal Kingdom, but I'm not certain it's been seen by enough members in the Academy to warrant a nomination.
Joe O'Shea, who will be live tweeting the main event with me on February 28, lists his picks as:
The Social Network, The King's Speech, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, True Grit, Toy Story 3, Black Swan, 127 Hours and Animal Kingdom.
And fellow blogger and film lover Sarah's also had her say:
Animal Kingdom, The Social Network, Black Swan, The Kids Are All Right, The Fighter, The King's Speech, Blue Valentine, Another Year, Toy Story 3 and (my reluctant pick) Inception.
*I'm choosing to be more naively optimistic about Animal Kingdom's hopes.
What are your picks for the best flicks of 2010?
UPDATE: The nominees have been named.

Id be interested to see what would happen to the list if they scrapped the voting system (where each of the ten songs you vote for gets an equal vote) and actually just stuck with a single favourite song, or awarded higher votes for the higher ranked...
