“The Road To Hell”

The greatest threat to the neo-liberal political economy is not terrorism, nor armed insurgency, nor drugs. It has always been and continues to be, grassroots community based organizing for self-sufficiency, self-reliance, self-determination, self-empowerment, and self-defense. In Mexico, as throughout the growing popular movements brewing all over Latin America, this type of organizing can be broken down to just one word: “autogestion”. Autogestion is the greatest threat to neo-liberalism, and the benefits of its global atrocities to the American population. When communities whose role within the neo-liberal political economy is that of a slave, a servant or worse yet, a disposable variable, begin to organize for self-sufficiency, self-reliance, self-determination, self-empowerment, and self-defense, that is the greatest threat to the security of the United States of America. In fact it is the only thing that has ever truly been considered a threat.

Bhopal Gas Disaster demonstration at University of Texas at Austin

Dow Must Pay ProtestMembers of the Association for India's Development held a slideshow presentation and collected signatures to support the survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster.

We hadn’t even turned the slideshow on yet when we got our first two signatures. Two UT students had seen the projector light from the main mall and their curiosity drew them to us. They read the fliers we handed to them, and after spending ten minutes or so talking to us they went on their way – they were informed about the world’s worst industrial disaster in Bhopal, India.

In 1984, a chemical leak at the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal exposed more than 500,000 people to deadly gases.

Austin Demands Fair Food

The Student/Farmworker Alliance - ATX converged on an area Burger King in a spirited Halloween protest. Chanting, “Down with the King, Off with his Head!” the organizers approached the restaurant. Featured in this video clip, BK employees did not seem happy to see the delegation. The manager-on-duty was clearly defensive, but just doing his job. BK VP Steve Grover, too, is defensive and continues to publicly reject the CIW's demands to work together to address the human rights crisis in the fields of Florida.

Local organizers vow to “keep the pressure on here in Austin, TX.”

CIW allies are converging on Miami this November 30th in support of the Coalition's demands.
