Trésor Osmar Kandol (born 30 August 1981 in
Banga,
Zaire) is a
Congolese international footballer. He currently plays for
Albacete Balompié in the Spanish
second division after being released by
Leeds United, before playing for Leeds he played at
Barnet,
Chesham United F.C.,
Darlington,
Dagenham & Redbridge,
Thurrock,
Bournemouth,
Cambridge United and
Luton Town in
England. He usually celebrates his goals with a
somersault, like his cousin
Lomano Tresor LuaLua. Kandol has became known as
Kandola in Spain
Early career
Kandol started his career at
Luton Town before having spells at
Cambridge United and Bournemouth, where he scored once in the LDV Vans Trophy against future club Barnet. He then dropped to non league football and became highly prolific goalscorer at Thurrock, his goals got him noticed back at a higher level of football and he joined
Dagenham & Redbridge in the conference and subsequently had a successful loan spell back in league football at Darlington.
Barnet
On 18 November 2006, Kandol scored an injury time winner against
Rochdale at
Underhill to complete his
hat-trick that also saw the Bees win their third consecutive league game. Whilst at Barnet in 2006, Kandol was sent to prison for 13 weeks for a series of driving offences.
Leeds United
After impressing at Barnet following his release, Kandol joined
Leeds United in a two month loan deal on 23 November 2006. He made his debut two days later as a substitute replacing
Robbie Blake in the 2–1 victory over
Plymouth Argyle. On 3 January 2007, his move to Elland Road was made permanent for a fee of £200,000. Kandol impressed in the opening stages of the 2007–08 season, and on 9 September, he sat top of the Football League One scoring charts.
His first of the season was a last minute header against Tranmere Rovers in Leeds' first ever game in the third tier of English football. He formed a successful strike partnership with Jermaine Beckford in the first half of the season and had become famous with the Leeds crowd for his trademark somersault-and-flip goal celebration. He and Beckford had also developed a trademark celebration that they shared, in which they raise to their tiptoes and demonstrate a basketball shooting action in each other's direction. Kandol's performances in the early part of the 2007–08 campaign had won over some Leeds fans, who gave him abuse for his under-par performances in the past. One of the most memorable was in Leeds 2-1 loss to Cheltenham Town at Elland Road, where Leeds fans were chanting for Kandol to be sent off, and when he was substituted for Anthony Elding an ironic cheer came from Leeds fans when his name was read out. The fans have even adapted the old song for Leeds legend Dominic Matteo, to fit with Kandol. Kandol lost his place in the side when manager Dennis Wise left the club and was replaced by Gary McAllister who signed Dougie Freedman who took Kandol's place in the Leeds starting 11. Leeds reached the playoff finals against Doncaster Rovers but lost 1-0 in which Kandol came on as a second half substitute.
With Leeds signing Luciano Becchio and Enoch Showunmi, Kandol was deemed surplus to requirements at Leeds. On 6 August 2008, Kandol joined Millwall on a six month loan deal until January 2009. Kandol scored his first goal for The Lions during a 4-3 home loss to Oldham Athletic where he scored in under 13 seconds. His second goal for Millwall came during their first home win of the 2008/2009 season against Huddersfield. On 13 September 2008 Kandol was sent off in the last few seconds against Leicester City. He then marked his return from a three-match ban in stunning fashion scoring 2 goals against Tranmere Rovers.
On 28 January 2009 Kandol's loan expired and he returned to Leeds United but his return was short-lived as on the 30th January 2009, Kandol joined Championship side Charlton Athletic on loan until May 3, 2009. On his 2nd appearance for the club, Kandol scored 2 against Watford.
With Kandol having spent most of the 2008-09 season on loan and Leeds' main strikers Jermaine Beckford, Luciano Becchio, Mike Grella, Enoch Showunmi and Robert Snodgrass all having scored more than Kandol did the previous season it seemed unlikely Kandol would feature prominently in any Leeds team in the future.
Before the start of the 2009/10 season he was told that he has no future at Elland Road. Kandol was named in the first team squad against Stockport County, which is the first time Kandol has been involved in a Leeds United squad since the playoff final loss to Doncaster Rovers. Kandol scored in Leeds reserves 2-1 over Middlesbrough. He and teammate Enoch Showunmi both scored a hatrick a piece in the 6-1 reserve win over Scunthorpe.
Kandol was named as an unused substitute in Leeds game against his former club Charlton Athletic. The game was only the second time Kandol had been involved in a matchday squad for Leeds in the 2009-10 season. Kandol made his first appearance for Leeds in over a year when he started Leeds' Football League Trophy game against Darlington. Kandol also scored in this game making it his first Leeds goal for over one and a half years, he was substituted at half time for Enoch Showunmi. This was due to illness with Simon Grayson stating Tresor was sick at half time. The performance against Darlington saw Kandol get praise from manager Simon Grayson and potentially earning him a recall to play against Norwich coming in for the injured Luciano Becchio. Kandol continued his good form by scoring 2 goals against Hartlepool Reserves, although he did pick up an injury in the same game.
He made his first League appearance against Norwich on 19 October 2009 since the Play-Off final in 2008, he made an impact and is sure to be back in Grayson's first team plans. Kandol scored his first league goal of the season in the 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers after coming on as a substitute, quickly followed by his second league goal of the season in the 4-0 win over Yeovil Town four days later, again as a substitute. Kandol received a 3 match ban after the Yeovil game due to an incident that took place after full time which seemed to show Kandol slapping an opponent in the face after the final whistle. The suspension comes as a big blow to Kandol as he was due to start the FA Cup game against Oldham due to fellow striker Sam Vokes being cup tied. After his three match ban was over, Kandol failed to make it onto Simon Grayson's bench against Leyton Orient and also against Kettering Town and Oldham Athletic but it was revealed that Kandol missed the games because of 'family reasons' meaning he had been unavailable for 6 games in a row after missing the first 3 of those because of suspension.
Kandol returned to the Leeds squad after a seven game absence when he was named on the bench in the FA Cup replay against Kettering Town. Kandol scored on his return as a substitute when he scored Leeds third goal of the game against Kettering Town which was his 4th goal of the season. Kandol started for Leeds in the JPT game against Accrington Stanley and was substituted in the second half for Max Gradel. Kandol came on as a sub against Stockport County and provided an assist for Leeds' fourth goal of the game scored by Jermaine Beckford. Kandol missed games against Manchester United and Wycombe Wanderers because of 'personal reasons'. He then returned to action for Leeds against Scunthorpe Reserves, and was set to be on the bench against Exeter but picked up a hamstring injury in training and was injured for over 2 months as a result of the injury. Kandol returned from injury for Leeds when he was named on the bench against Huddersfield Town, he also made his playing return in the same game when he came on as a second half substitute.
He and Beckford had also developed a trademark celebration that they shared, in which they raise to their tiptoes and demonstrate a basketball shooting action in each other's direction.
Kandol was sent off 20 seconds after coming on as a substitute against Norwich City, a match which Leeds lost 1-0, potentially making Norwich City champions of the Coca Cola League one at 82 points, ahead of runners up leeds United and Millwall with 71 points each. After his suspension ended Kandol wasn't involved in a Leeds squad again after the Norwich incident. Although he did join in Leeds' celebrations at Elland Road when they were promoted as League 1 runners up after beating Bristol Rovers.
On 14th May Kandol was put on the transfer list and allowed to search for a new club. During the 2010-11 squad number announcement Kandol was omitted from having a squad number for Leeds for the forthcoming season, despite wearing the number 33 shirt during pre season training. His 'Player Profile Page' was also taken off the Leeds United Club Website for the forthcoming season. Kandol was released by Leeds on 4th August 2010.
Albacete
After becoming a free agent and able to sign for a club outside the transfer window on the 5th September Kandol signed for Spanish
second division side
Albacete.
Congo DR
Kandol made his first cap for
Congo DR national football team against
Gabon on 25 March 2008. His cousin Lomana LuaLua had also been the captain of the national side before being stripped of the captaincy in 2008.
Other
Kandol is the cousin of the
Olympiacos player
Lomana LuaLua and
Newcastle United player
Kazenga LuaLua. Trésor shares the same goal celebration as his cousin Lomana. Kandol is also a relative of
Yannick Bolasie, who plays for Kandol's former club Barnet. His nickname is TK20 or Big Tres.
He is also the uncle of David Mikabidi
