The 2011 Guardian and Observer Christmas appeal is in support of disadvantaged teenagers and young adults. The eight charities we are backing have a proven track record in helping youngsters develop confidence, resilience and life skills, prepare them for training, education and work, and in some cases divert them from crime. All of the projects have been specially chosen for their skills in reaching out to alienated young people. Each has demonstrated huge success in enabling those youngsters to make the most of opportunities to nurture their talents, maximise their life chances, and ultimately, to engage with and give back to their local communities.

These are hard times for young people. For those who live at the margins of society it can be even harder. Please help us to help disadvantaged young people change their lives for the better.
