"Health Care in the Developing World" (BIO 218): In 2006, sixteen students traveled to Macha, Zambia and were introduced, first-hand, to the fundamentals of health care in sub-Saharan Africa. For two and a half weeks, daily lectures were complemented with field trips to a rural health center, a traditional healer, a medical mission hospital, and guest lectures from traditional birth attendants and community health workers. Students were able to accompany and observe physicians while on rounds, as well as during surgical procedures. Students had ample opportunity to interact with members of the Batonga tribe daily outside of class in the local markets, at the 'fires,' at church, and wherever students could walk--the people were sincerely friendly. During the last few days, students also participated in more sightseeing with a tour of Chobe Game Park in Botswana (think elephants, zebras, hippos, gazelle, etc), Victoria Falls, and canoed down the Zambezi River!

Zambia: Interactive education by radio
Zambia: Interactive education by radio
Kalisowe is a tiny village in the Diocese of Monze, southern Zambia and is one of many receiving government-produced education programmes daily. Children gather around their radio with a "facilitator" who is prompted by various commands to run activities helping them learn. This clip also features music by Kalisowe's own local band, the Jabalando Brothers.

Zambian Women Spiritual Singing
Zambian Women Spiritual Singing
This is a video that I filmed of a group of Zambian women singing at the nightly prayer meeting at the future site of the International Bible College in Kizembe, Zambia. These women are the wives of some of the Zambian Baptist ministers who were working at the college. These women prepared three meals, daily, for all of us (they often sang while they cooked). Every night, they blessed us with their wonderful singing. I just regret that I didn't get more tape of their singing...but I am very hopeful for my anticipated visit there next year.

Zimbabwe to buy maize from Zim farmers in Zambia
Zimbabwe to buy maize from Zim farmers in Zambia
While farms that were once highly productive lie idle under the new ownership of ZANU-PF officials and cronies, Zimbabwe is in the process of negotiating a deal to import maize from neighboring Zambia. The tragic irony is that the crops being sought after were grown by white farmers who were illegally booted off their land in Zimbabwe. Many wound up in neighboring countries, which are now benefiting from their expertise. Zambia used to import maize and other food items from Zimbabwe, but with the influx of some of Zimbabwe's best farmers, they've once again produced a surplus maize crop. Zimbabwe on the other hand has recorded a deficit of 500000 tonnes of the daily food staple this year. Chiredzi based farmer Gerry Whitehead described the whole situation as "disgusting". He said: "Approximately 90% of these Zambian crops are coming from ex-Zimbabwean farmers who were forced off their land here." Sipula Kabanje, Zambia's high commissioner to Zimbabwe, confirmed in reports that the negotiations with Zimbabwe were going on through Zambia's maize agent, the Food Reserve Agency (FRA). He said Zimbabwe also wants to import other food items like wheat, beef and dairy products from Zambia. Whitehead explained that many farms in Zimbabwe are producing nothing at all. He said: "I have travelled quite a bit in Zimbabwe on business and you can see the land is lying idle. I mean you drive between here and Harare and it's hundreds of kilometers of idle land, nothing." The farmer also ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: ZAMBIA - CLIMATE CHANGE & CHILDREN (UNICEF)
MaximsNewsNetwork: 09 May 2010 - UNICEF: Zambia - UNICEF and the government of Zambia recently opened the Zambia Childrens Climate Conference, a series of lectures and workshops to teach the science behind climate change, tree planting, water harvesting, drip irrigation, solar energy, energy saving techniques and environmental issues. Zambias first lady, Thandiwe Banda, spoke to delegates about the environmental issues affecting their country, now the 2nd most deforested country on the planet with recent floods, attributed to climate change, that displaced over a thousand people in the Lusaka earlier this year. The countrys permanent secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, Environment, and Natural Resources and UNICEFs regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa opened the conference and stressed that the exploitation of natural resources continues unabated throughout much of Africa, destroying forests, grasslands, water ways, soil and all who rely upon them. This was the worlds first national childrens conference on climate change, since the CCF, the Copenhagen Climate Forum, took place in the countrys capital, Lusaka. The conference, which was attended by almost 200 children from all 9 provinces of Zambia, was supported by UNICEF and Government, but organized by Zambias youth delegates to Copenhagen, who returned to their country determined to make a difference. AAC - Aid Africas Children Organization and Locals Join Forces to Build Zambia School
AAC - Aid Africas Children Organization and Locals Join Forces to Build Zambia School
How does Aid Africas Children (AAC) and Ryan Moore, a 26 year old man from Lincolnshire, Illinois build a government endorsed school in Zambia for considerably less money than similar public schools? It certainly takes determination, patience, and a lot of hard work to deal with cultural differences, local business practices, and the practical problems dealing in remote African areas, but AAC has found to be successful, the need to create cooperation is imperative. Most of all, having a local and trusted presence fluent in the native African dialect and willing to go to the source to understand and accomplish the needs of people we help, distinguishes Aid Africas Childrens projects from other charities. One of the ways Aid Africas Children (AAC), helps vulnerable children in devastated African communities affected by AIDS and poverty is by providing tools for empowerment through education. With the tireless effort of Ryan Moore, a Peace Corp Volunteer stationed in Zambia and the community effort of many people from several villages, AAC started the construction of a school for 119 children in Matushi, a remote region in NW Zambia. The story of this school is instructive in the ways AAC has learned to help these and other wonderful children who, without outside assistance might only perpetuate their vicious cycle of poverty. Ryan Moore knew his time and resources in Zambia were limited and was determined to learn what he could do to make a difference in their lives. He ...
