The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8; however, other values have been proposed, from 7.7 to as high as 8.25. The main shock epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles (3 km) from the city, near Mussel Rock. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total of 296 miles (477 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. The earthquake and resulting fire is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire, estimated to be above 3000, is the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history. The economic impact has been compared with the more recent Hurricane Katrina.

Here's a portion of another old 1950s documentary - the story of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Photography was invented only a few decades before this & motion pictures were in their infancy as well. This story is told with those old movies & photos. At almost precisely 5:12 am, local time, a foreshock occurred with sufficient force to be felt widely throughout the San Francisco Bay area. The great earthquake broke loose some 20 to 25 seconds later, with an epicenter near San Francisco. Violent shocks punctuated the strong shaking which lasted some 45 to 60 seconds. It's common knowledge that Scotsmen are macho enough to pull off wearing a skirt - perhaps it's all that caber-tossing. This disarmingly simple film concentrates on the tartan cloths of various clans rather than the men who wore them, and is an early filmic reminder of their huge importance to both Scottish national identity and the thriving tourist industry north of the border. The film's unique selling point was that pioneering filmmaker GA Smith showed off the vibrant designs in Kinemacolor, among the earliest colour film processes that didn't involve meticulous hand-painting. It should be noted that the driver of the car with the license plate of what appears to be #4867 is more than likely Harry Miles of the Miles Bros. who shot this film. He would be one of the first film makers to place himself anonymously in his own movies similar to the way Alfred Hitchcock did. The Miles Bros. had just built the first fully functioning and equipped motion picture studio and were set to start cranking out films and distributing them the way films are done today. Unfortunately, the earthquake and fire devastated and destroyed all the equipment, plans, and photos of the studio. Less than 2 years later Harry, who was the creative mind behind the Miles Bros. is believed to have taken his own life leaping from his New York apt. building. A fantastic trip to the past. This film is incredible at showing all of the nuances of daily life over 100 years ago.

SUMMARY This film shows the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the devastation resulting from the subsequent three-day fire. The 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck at 5:12am and was centered along the San Andreas Fault, which slices through coastal California. Most of the cities of central California were badly damaged. San Francisco, with thousands of unreinforced brick buildings - and thousands more closely-spaced wooden Victorian dwellings - was poorly prepared for a major fire. Collapsed buildings, broken chimneys, and a shortage of water due to broken mains led to several large fires that soon coalesced into a city-wide holocaust. The fire swept over nearly a quarter of the city, including the entire downtown area. Dynamite was used with varying success to prevent the fire from spreading westward. Over 3000 people are now estimated to have died as a result of the disaster. For the surviving refugees, the first few weeks were hard; as aid poured in from around the country, thousands slept in tents in city parks, and all citizens were asked to do their cooking in the street. A severe shortage of public transportation made a taxicab out of anything on wheels. Numerous businesses relocated teporarily in Oakland and many refugees found lodgings outside the city. The Great Santa Rosa Earthquake of 1906 documentary wins award for KFTY and the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa A documentary on the 1906 earthquake that destroyed Santa Rosa one hundred years has won a Telly Award for production excellence. This archival video was produced by the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa on the 100th anniversary of the earthquake as a service to the community. The award honors ad agencies, production companies, TV stations, and cable companies for outstanding production work. The documentary was the brainchild of Rotarian Jim Johnson, who founded and operated Santa Rosas local television station in 1981 through 1990. Johnson wrote and narrated the video, which featured more than 300 archival photographs of the quakes damage. Why did the Santa Rosa Rotary Club produce a video documentary about an earthquake? The history of this Rotary Club is tied closely to that small farming town 100 years ago that dug out from total destruction 100 years ago and became the fifth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first service club in the world, Rotary was founded in 1905, one year before that Big Quake. It is filmed from the front of a cable car, heading east toward the ferry terminal building, which is the tower in the background (which survived the quake and still stands today).
