From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Jim Kirchherr profiles the life of Edward Butch O'Hare. A few months after Pearl Harbor, O'Hare shot down five Japanese planes in a single battle to save his aircraft carrier. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and became a national hero. O'Hare International Airport in Chicago was named as a tribute to him.

John Basilone was the Best of his generation for his part.
Just like Edward "Butch" O'Hare, he won the Medal of Honor and refused a commission to stay out of combat.
Both men were killed in action.
John Basilone married Lena May Riggi on June 10th, 1944.
John was Killed on Iwo Jima, February 19th 1945
Lena Basilone was notified on March 7th, 1945, her 32nd birthday.
She never remarried.
When she died, June 11th, 1999, she still had on the ring that "Johnny" had bought her.

Produced in the early 1970s, "Hook Down, Wheels Down" was one of the most comprehensive (and expensive) films made by the U.S. Navy. It covers the history and development of the U.S. aircraft carrier, and does so through interviews with many of the men who made it happen. While dozens of aircraft carriers are featured, it is the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) that takes center stage -- and the material shot on her deck looks like it is right out of ""Top Gun"". There is wonderful flight op footage, great aerial flight footage, incredible WWII dog fightand bombing footage as well as endless aircraft carrier operational footage. Also shown in this film are very rare images of the first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1) (formerly collier USS Jupiter AC-3). The follow on vessels are widely featured including USS Lexington (CV-3) and the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Coral Sea. Overview
From Pearl Harbor through 1942 the F4F Wildcat was the only U.S. fighter in the Pacific theater capable of thwarting the advances of Japan's naval air forces. And though it was slower and less maneuverable than the vaunted Zero, its heavier armor, self-sealing fuel tanks and rugged airframe could often help a skilled pilot overcome this performance gap and live to fight another day.

Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone (January 17, 1899 – January 25, 1947) was an American gangster who led a Prohibition-era crime syndicate. The Chicago Outfit, which subsequently became known as the "Capones", was dedicated to smuggling and bootlegging liquor, and other illegal activities such as prostitution, in Chicago from the early 1920s to 1931.
Born in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City to Italian immigrants, Capone became involved with gang activity at a young age after being expelled from school at age 14. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago to take advantage of a new opportunity to make money smuggling illegal alcoholic beverages into the city during Prohibition. He also engaged in various other criminal activities, including bribery of government figures and prostitution. Despite his illegitimate occupation, Capone became a highly visible public figure. He made donations to various charitable endeavors using the money he made from his activities, and was viewed by many to be a "modern-day Robin Hood".

While dozens of aircraft carriers are featured, it is the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) that takes center stage -- and the material shot on her deck looks like it is right out of "Top Gun". There is wonderful flight op footage, great aerial flight footage, incredible WWII dog fightand bombing footage as well as endless aircraft carrier operational footage. Also shown in this film are very rare images of the first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1) (formerly collier USS Jupiter AC-3). John Basilone was the Best of his generation for his part. Just like Edward "Butch" O'Hare, he won the Medal of Honor and refused a commission to stay out of combat. Both men were killed in action. John Basilone married Lena May Riggi on June 10th, 1944. John was Killed on Iwo Jima, February 19th 1945 Lena Basilone was notified on March 7th, 1945, her 32nd birthday. She never remarried. When she died, June 11th, 1999, she still had on the ring that "Johnny" had bought her. -

There is wonderful flight op footage, great aerial flight footage, incredible WWII dog fightand bombing footage as well as endless aircraft carrier operational footage. Also shown in this film are very rare images of the first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1) (formerly collier USS Jupiter AC-3). The follow on vessels are widely featured including USS Lexington (CV-3) and the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Coral Sea.
