NEW Zealand may just have won a decades-long battle with Australia over pavlova, after the treat's origins were redefined by a leading English-language authority.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the dessert - meringue with fruit and cream - was first made in New Zealand, www.stuff.co.nz reports.

Named after Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova, who visited both New Zealand and Australia in the 1920s, the dessert is popular in both countries.

The OED determined that the first recipe for the pavlova was recorded in 1927 in Davis Dainty Dishes, published by the Davis Gelatine company. Australia’s claim comes from a 1935 recipe by Perth hotel chef Bert Sachse.

A new edition of the OED was published online Wednesday, tracing when words entered the English language.
