Northline to get new $5m technology backbone

NATIONAL freight company Northline has signed a $5 million deal with Brennan IT to overhaul its ageing IT infrastructure.

The new five-year IT deal will form the technological backbone of Northline's operations, and will afford the 400-strong business access to, among other things, portable personalised numbers and video conferencing - an advantage to a business specialising in servicing remote locations. Northline chief executive Craige Whitton said the IT overhaul would streamline business operations.

"It allows us to serve our customers better," he said. "It gives us more mobility at work - every employee will have their own portable phone number, so no matter where they are located within our national operations, our customers can get hold of them.

"This enhanced mobility also allows our guys to sit in front of a customer, log into our system and let customers see what's happening on their account.

"This real-time access makes it easier for our people to make faster decisions." While cost was not a driving factor in the agreement, Mr Whitton said the deal had worked out in Northline's advantage.

"We're paying for this infrastructure on a per-user, per-month basis, which allows us to align our IT costs with seasonal changes in demand," he said.

Importantly, Mr Whitton said, there was a good deal of similarity between the two companies, which helped to foster the deal. "Brennan IT is a good cultural fit for Northline," he said.

"It's an established and growing business which is large enough to deliver what we need nationally, but small enough to be responsive to our needs."
