Tram, train strike to hit Test

PUBLIC transport services will be stretched to the limit tonight as train and tram drivers go on strike from 5pm to 9pm.

With a packed Ashes crowd pouring out of Adelaide Oval and Christmas parties held across the city, thousands are expected to be inconvenienced.

A spokesperson for the Transport Department said 10 extra buses would run from Adelaide Oval to Glenelg to replace trams during the strike.

The department is asking train users to be patient.

Taxi driver Michael Xavier said the strike was a burden on taxi resources.

"Taxi drivers are among the least experienced drivers on the road and it will be busier because of the lack of public transport," he said.

"What is worse is that people are not willing to multiple-hire so that more people are waiting longer."

A police spokesman warned motorists to take care in the city and driving to and from work with more traffic congestion expected.

"Allow more time to go to work tomorrow and watch out for pedestrians and revellers in and around the city on the first day of the Ashes," he said.

Both drivers and pedestrians should remain alert during the Christmas party season.

"Consider arranging for a friend or relative to pick you up after the cricket or after work," the spokesman said.

If those out in the private sector think that this is not the start of all of the current conditions they have being slashed straigth after the public services they must think again. Rudd removed a lot of Howards laws only for this current state goverment to bring in new laws to slash conditions and workers rights look at the new WorkCover laws. One day it will effect you and who will support you think about it?

The nightmare of every worker who commutes from a long way out to the city or near it by train. I suffered from these train driver boofheads for decades and lost all respect for them, and the train system as well which stinks! Bunch of selfish blackhearts! Never, ever rely on the train system in this city, ever!

I am going to be one of many thousands impacted by the train cancellation tomorrow but irrespective of my right-wing views about unions and strikes,I agree that the state government's withdrawal of agreed work conditions is unconscionable particularly given the self-serving, and possibly corrupt, private allocation of funds to rorts such as the Puglia grants. In this case, the unions have a point...and I will join the bus queues to the southern suburbs after the cricket.
