Kenji

THE MASTERLY technique and vivid imagination of Kenji Ito continue to provide a compelling blend of the traditional and modern at this little gem in the city's southeast corner.

There is sparkling fresh sushi and sashimi, of course, and cracking tempura, making this one of the very best places to experience these Japanese staples.

But that same obsession with finding the best ingredients shows up in less conventional dishes that might introduce elements such as quandongs, mozzarella or maple syrup.

While the chef's exuberance might occasionally get the better of him, there are so many thrills it's easy to forgive the odd spill. That goodwill is helped by the cheery staff and relaxed ambience that is a world away from the more formal Japanese approach.

This is the third year in a row that Kenji has taken out this award. We would love to see another Asian restaurant break out of the comfort zone and rise to the challenge.
