PUBLIC transport services will be stretched to the limit tonight as train and tram drivers go on strike from 5pm to 9pm.
With a packed Ashes crowd pouring out of Adelaide Oval and Christmas parties held across the city, thousands are expected to be inconvenienced.
A spokesperson for the Transport Department said 10 extra buses would run from Adelaide Oval to Glenelg to replace trams during the strike.
The department is asking train users to be patient.
Taxi driver Michael Xavier said the strike was a burden on taxi resources.
"Taxi drivers are among the least experienced drivers on the road and it will be busier because of the lack of public transport," he said.
"What is worse is that people are not willing to multiple-hire so that more people are waiting longer."
A police spokesman warned motorists to take care in the city and driving to and from work with more traffic congestion expected.
"Allow more time to go to work tomorrow and watch out for pedestrians and revellers in and around the city on the first day of the Ashes," he said.
Both drivers and pedestrians should remain alert during the Christmas party season.
"Consider arranging for a friend or relative to pick you up after the cricket or after work," the spokesman said.
