KEEPING-it-real is the modern ethos for makers of old-world produce. And those producers have taught consumers to be discerning; to read labels and eat and drink well.
This Adelaide Hills cider maker has put reality in the glass and its visual presence is worth venerable pondering. Perry Lobo will seduce with its hazy yellow/lime luminescence if it was poured on a TV commercial it would be done in saliva-inducing slow-mo. It uses fruit from Lenswood: Pound cooking pears, Lemon Bergamot and a dash of Champion quince. Its unfiltered real fruit aroma is fresh cut. And its medium pear ripeness is lightly dry with a fine bead and a zestful tartness as it finishes. This is (5.7 per cent) cider from the top shelf.
The twist: Like a bottle-conditioned ale, Lobo's fruit and yeast is suspended in the bottle. Drinkers can embrace its healthy, soupy density or cool the bottle with care and pour it lean and clean.
Goes well: With plenty of fruity conversation.
