About Nathan

by Nathan Hamm

I am an Oregon native, now residing in the far southern latitudes of the lower 48. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in Political Science in 2000. After graduation I joined, the Peace Corps, thinking I was going to Russia. As fate would have it, I was assigned to Uzbekistan, where I learned that there were places far more interesting than Russia. I lived and worked in the city of Navoiy. In 2007, I finished my M.A in International Studies in Russia, East Europe, and Central Asian studies at the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. My award-winning thesis on internal factors constraining Uzbekistan’s and Kazakhstan’s foreign policies can be found here.

I was the first Regional Editor for Central Asia and the Caucasus (as well as Russia and Eastern Europe) at the wonderful Global Voices Online. For the past several years, I have been doing work that keeps me engaged daily with Central Asian affairs. Nothing I or others write on Registan.net reflects upon my employer or its clients, nor does it represent either’s opinions, policies, or ideas.

For a bit more about me, you can find interviews with me here and here.
