What's HOT

Thanksgiving pumpkin pie

Last weekend, I went to visit family. My Granny and Aunt Billie were visiting my mom from Texas. I was really inspired by the Food Diplomats and Cuisine Ambassadors panel at BlogHer Food '10, so I struck up a conversation with them about food traditions and memories.  Read more

Woman Sneezing on Airplane

Sitting around the table, it wasn’t just the occasional family drama that made me cringe. It was the fact that my very own relatives were so distracted by the “good eats” that they forgot to take some simple preventive health measures -– things that could have easily prevented the germs from being passed along with the pumpkin pie. While the seasonal flu may not be very prevalent right now, I couldn’t help but think that it’s only a matter of time. While the flu is known to come on as quickly as our post-turkey comas, it’s symptoms are much more severe. Therefore, in an effort to prevent the flu from ruining future family gatherings, I thought I’d share some simple stay-healthy tips.  Read more

Thanksgiving 2009

I've been kind of jealous of all the posts about family and togetherness and general happy-talk about Thanksgiving. My husband, a professional firefighter, works a 24-hour shift today. I'm trying to decide between wearing my Grumpypants or my Thanksgiving pants today. I'm trying to pull on the Thanksgiving pants one leg at a time, and -- thankfully -- I'm getting a little help from others around the blogosphere.  Read more

Cabbage Patch Kid

Part of me understood why my parents hadn't rushed out to buy one. I knew money was tight. Why else would we be living in a run-down trailer where rent was less than what some people spend on groceries in a week? I understood that there were medical bills to pay, that scraping by meant sacrifice, and that a doll was the last thing our pennies should be spent on. But I was still devastated.  Read more

Lemon meringue pie

Maybe it's because I'm often the one making the pie, but I don't like meringue. It shrinks. It weeps. It gets floppy. Success cannot be guaranteed. The weather plays a part, as do the Dessert Fates. I will make meringue for macarons, for iles flottantes, or for chewy, nutty meringue cookies.  Read more

The Sexy

teen girls

Young American girls know what's sexy.   It's the Abercrombie & Fitch pants they wear and the Dolce & Gabbana purses they carry.    It's also their Herbal Essences shampoo, MAC foundation and Victoria Secret-enhanced breasts. Throw in a t-shirt that fits too tight, a few piercings, a tattoo, a touch of devious behavior and the stage is set for action.  Read more

Blog

My first blog entry was in April of 2008.  I was a SAHM with a baby and a 3 year-old.   Hot topics were BPA in sippy cups, vaccines, and autism.  I worried.  A lot.  There were days I filled the recycle bin with plastics.  Days I dreaded taking my baby to get his shots, especially after he broke out with measles from his MMR vaccine.  Research was therapy.  WebMD was my best friend.  I longed to connect with other moms who were as neurotic as me.  Thus, my blog was born.  I wanted to create a space where I could talk about some of these issues.  It was cathartic.  I loved the camaraderie and learned so much.  Read more

christmas tree

Today I did something I swore I would never do: I bought a fake Christmas tree, a fake.  Read more
