A cheeky little vintage crime

September 30th, 2010 · No Comments · Life

According to the Guardian, thieves stole a French winegrower’s entire harvest – 30 tonnes of grapes over 2 hectares.   A few thoughts:

How do winegrowers survive if their entire harvest, a whole year’s work, is only worth £13,000?
How much do grape-harvesting machines cost?  Presumably this bloke has one for his own harvest and it sits in [...]

The mean streets of Worthing

March 10th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Life

Brighton’s Argus is always guaranteed to throw up a decent headline or two, and the best usually end up on the posters outside shops.  I wonder if this headline will be one of them: Hunt for Worthing “poo thief”?

Rise in hate crime follows BNP council election victories

January 16th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Politics

Well that is the headline in this Guardian story, which doesn’t come as any surprise at all – it is inevitable really.  Even the BNP don’t deny that the numbers of racially-motivated crimes has risen where they have won seats – they just have a different explanation for it.  According to them it is not [...]

From each according to their ability…

January 12th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Life

I did like what I read in this story from Switzerland.
Basically, a bloke got a speeding ticket and was fined £182,000 for doing 55mph in a 55mph zone.  It might seem a bit harsh, but the amount was decided based on the man’s ability to pay and not the scale of the offence.
Some might think [...]

Hat tip to Angry people in local papers
You know what?  I reckon even I could get a job as a police artist in Bolivia.  Love the way they keep zooming in on the picture to try and make it scary…

Crime and punishment

October 26th, 2009 · No Comments · Life

I don’t know how American law works, hell I don’t even know how British law works, but I’ll be surprised if the victim of a child sex case can ask for charges to be dropped, even if the accused is an Oscar-winning film director.

Two thousand??

March 4th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Life

I am finding this story hard to believe.  I am not saying that I think it is not true – I do not know enough about truck specifications have a qualified opinion – just that it is hard to believe, in the same way that it is hard to believe that something the size of [...]

Hanging On The Telephone

October 23rd, 2008 · 1 Comment · Life

Several times in the past I have banged on about damaged cable TV/telephone distribution boxes.  I used to call Virgin Media to report them but gave up after being faced with a distinct lack of interest from them. The only time I would persevere now is if the one that feeds my house is open.
There [...]

At Swim Two Birds

October 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Life

Be on your guard: duck thieves are at large in Eastbourne.  An alternative theory is that the two birds ran away because they didn’t like the implications of their names….  ‘Aromatic’ and ‘A l’Orange’.
