De Kretser is right on floods: Bandt

Greens MP Adam Bandt has backed yesterday's comments from the Victorian Governor on the relationship between climate change and flooding and has said Premier Baillieu is being irresponsible in denying the link.

"The immediate task is to ensure the safety and welfare of Victorians affected by the floods. But this should not prevent us from having a discussion about the impact of climate change and the likelihood of these extreme events recurring," Greens MP Adam Bandt said.

State Election Results

The official VEC results are finally in.

Here is how The Greens fared in the 2010 Victorian election, our most successful state election.

1)      Our Upper House result is the highest ever achieved by The Greens in a state election on the mainland.

2)      The Greens vote rose by 1.2% in the Lower House (to 11.2%) and around 1.6% in the Upper House (to 12.1%) compared to 2006.

3)      Our vote rose in every one of the Upper House regions, and in more than 60 of the Lower House regions.

4)      We achieved primary vote swings in our four strongest lower house electorates – Melbourne, Richmond, Brunswick and Northcote.

5)      We achieved strong swings (up to 8.9%) in an arc of seats stretching from Williamstown to Ivanhoe, including Footscray, Derrimut, Essendon, Pascoe Vale and Preston.

6)     Colleen Hartland has been re-elected to Western Metro with a swing of 4%, alongside Sue Pennicuik in Southern Metropolitan and Greg Barber in Northern Metropolitan.

Greens Win Western Metro

Colleen Hartland, Greens MLC for Western Metro, has retained her seat in the state election after the latest recount.

Analysts have put the margin at 2035 votes, which is a 4% swing to The Greens.

The announcement is great news for the popular local member and her hardworking staff, who understand well the pressures of tight contests.

Last election, Colleen won by just 128 votest. To increase that margin by almost 2000 votes is a great credit to Colleen's hard work at the local level.

More details to come on wider Greens results as they are confirmed.
