Kinect – The Future of Gaming

I’ve not done a post about the fantastic hacking work that’s being done on Microsoft Kinects yet yet do have a google for ‘Kinect Hack’ – within hours of it being released there were opensource drivers available to connect it to a Pc or Mac and people have already started making great things. Thanks to these hacks the Kinect is being called the future of gaming but I’d like to present you with the real future of console gaming using the Kinect;

Mamika – Super Granny

Grandma’s Superhero Therapy is a series of photos that was created to help with French photographer Sacha Goldberger’s 91 year old granny with her depression. Inspiring.

Danny MacAskill & Chris Akrigg

We’ve posted several videos of Danny MacAskill
and Chris Akrigg before – they’re both unique cyclists who do the most mindblowing stunts.
I started to write this post about Chris’ first attempt on a fixed gear bike (so beloved of fcuking annoying hipster-types) when a mail popped into my inbox from reader Shaun with a video of Danny taking a trip from his current home in Edinburgh back to his hometown Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye. Both videos are well worth watching – nobody rides like Danny but Chris shows what a fixie is capable of when not in the hands of a wanker.

Musical Mashinations

Regular reader Shaun sends this link to Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip covering Sugababes’ Push the Button which reminded me to search for Scroobius Pip’s early solo work entitled ‘No Commercial Breaks’ which turns out to be very easy to find

I’d also highlight mash-up artiste Girl Talk have a new album called All Day which is free to download probably much to the disappointment of these artists who are sampled on it

#I am spartacus

So there’s an amusing twist to the story of the guy who was prosecuted for tweeting that he wanted to blow up Robin Hood airport. Today the No1 trending hashtag for the UK is now #iamspartacus where thousands of people are threatening to blow the airport up too.

Cake delivery

You’ll be able to work out what is going to happen in this video from the first few seconds of the clip, but it’s still very much worth watching.

KiteSurfer jumps Brighton Pier

We’d been hearing rumours that Lewis Crathern, the ex-British Kitesurfing Champion who jumped Worthing pier last year jumped Brighton’s Palace Pier yesterday. Well, it turns out he did, and here’s the video to prove it. Good to see someone making good use of a thoroughly disgusting day.

Autopsy of a CPU

I know this might sound very geeky but I recommend checking out this Pentium 3 autopsy and see what it looks like under a scanning electron microscope. Astounding for something that cost about £50.

Snow White Remix

If you remember the superb Disney Alice remix done a while back by Pogo then you’ll know the level of excellence to expect from his new track, all sounds taken from the 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I’m in love with the Hammond organ sound he made from Snow White voice.

Tight Squeeze

The physics of piloting a cruise ship under a bridge that’s lower than the usual sailing height of the ship Allure of the Seas. Amazing – I felt like cheering with the crowd as they passed underneath.

Flash Mob Gone Wrong

Regular readers will be well aware of Tom Scott, we’ve featured him many times in the past, attempting to strip his fingerprints off with pineapple or running the UK Talk Like a Pirate Day or generally being involved in lots of the tech events I’m associated with. He’s one of the most interesting people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting as this highly entertaining story about modern technology shows.

Zebra Imaging’s mind-blowing holograms

I’m quite speechless seeing Zebra Imaging‘s 3d holograms. It’s a technology that I had thought had pretty much run it’s course but seeing a 360 degree hologram with such detail has changed my mind. They’re mailable since they’re flat and no special viewing equipment is required. You just mail them you CAD drawing and get the full colour hologram back

These Are a Few of My Favourite Things

I’ve only just found out that this happened, if I’d known earlier I would have made every effort to fly over to Norway to witness two of my favourite musicians collaborating. Dame Evelyn Glennie with DJ Yoda mixing visuals, samples and live performance covering dubstep to Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells.
I’d love to see more from the DJ and the Dame.

Conspiracy or Insanity?

Just stumbled across a very bizarre article on the blog of Charlie Stross (a most excellent author indeed). The post is a write-up of a most bizarre incidence that happened the other night in the House of Lords wheren the normally relatively sane and respectable Lord James of Blackheath claimed that he had been approached by ‘Foundation X’ offering to pay £5 billion to the British government for reasons unknown. It makes very odd reading indeed. The video is here (starts around 2hr30mins-ish) and it’s starting to get picked up elsewhere.  He makes other odd claims too including predicting a second financial collapse in the second week of February next year.  Very odd.

Running on empty

Reading back through the entertaining history of the Andrea Moda Formula One racing team back in the early 90′s I was struck by the thought that they could only have been even worse if they had employed Bruno Senna or Vitaly Petrov – 2 of the worst drivers I’ve ever seen.

Invasion Of The Bunny Snatchers

Just found this cartoon from a few years back which I was trying to explain to a friend last night. The more I described it to him, the more I thought I had been hallucinating. Daffy Duck with a human mouth, badly drawn characters, ET making an appearance in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, meta upon meta – it all seemed like a dream until I finally tracked it down. I’m gonna hate having to explain this one to the kids.

Film Gifs

If we don’t, remember me is the rather odd name for this tumblr feed of animated gifs made from movie stills. There are page after page of well-crafted and somewhat hypnotic gifs. I’m particularly fond of the Fargo and The Shining ones.

Voices You’ve Never Heard Before

Here’s an amazing collection of recordings of some of the most important people of the 20th century. Oscar Wilde, Harry Houdini, Ernest Shackleton, Florence Nightingale, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Edison, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Buffalo Bill and Leo Tolstoy feature amongst them.

VLC for iPhone

Woo and indeed Yay! Just been playing with VLC for iPhone and it rocks! If you haven’t used VLC before, it works on most platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux etc) and you can throw pretty much any video made with any codec and it will play, even if the files are corrupted. It works beautifully on the iPhone too now, just allow the app to fileshare in iTunes and then drop any video onto it and it will play. No more having to convert movies to watch them on the go.

What to Wear?

I’m officially now a responsible adult – I must be, they’ve called me up for Jury duty. My old NWA t-shirt is long gone but I did find this most excellent t-shirt that I could take with me.  Can anyone think of anything else more inappropriate to wear (not that I actually would).
