Editorial: Up in smoke

A week and a half ago, in this column, we welcomed the announcement that a smoking ban at the country’s airports had come into effect and was being enforced with fines. We were too hasty. Haj: Picture of the Day

Pilgrims do the farewell circumambulation (tawaful widaa) of the Kaaba on Thursday in Makkah as the final ritual of the Haj. Earlier, the pilgrims threw seven pebbles at the Satan for the third day in a row before returning to Makkah before sunset. The tawaful widaa is known as farewell tawaf, and it should be done at the last hour before leaving Makkah. If after the tawaf the pilgrim spends another night in Makkah, he or she is required to do the tawaf again. (AN photo by Marwan Al-Johani)
