what does the cat do, and why?

C@T is a Temporary Autonomous Zone created for the free exchange of information. Low tech grass roots net access for real people. Pedestrians, public transport and pushbikes on the information super hypeway.

Information is power. We need better communication tools to help get powerful information to activists and potential activists who need it. The internet is a cheap global communication network, using computers. It reverses the trend from top down broadcasting of TV and radio, and lets information flow across and under. With good ideas, a little training and a little technology, most anyone can reach a global audience. Cat is here to help with the training and technology. Just bring your ideas.

Cat@lyst is access to the internet for community activists. This means access to both use the net and to publish on it. It's run as an anarchist collective of volunteers. It's non-profit. We do:

  • activist web sites
  • radical online discussion groups
  • desktop publishing and web production gear
  • training
  • publicity
  • mobile internet, webcasts, and benefit gigs
  • recycling computer gear
  • networking with similar efforts elsewhere
  • looking after the organisation
  • geekery to keep this all running
