On the streets of Jakarta, just a few miles on from a towering Marlboro Man cigarette advertisement, there's a second cigarette billboard featuring an American celebrity - singer Kelly Clarkson. The former American Idol winner invites fans to buy tickets to her upcoming concert in Jakarta, the nation's capital. The logo of her sponsor is splashed in huge type above her head - the popular Indonesian cigarette brand LA Lights. It's the sort of 'in-your-face' tobacco advertising that has been banned in the US and many other countries, but Indonesia remains a special case. The world's fourth most populous nation allows tobacco companies virtual free rein to peddle their products. However public debate exploded here after Indonesia's second-largest Islamic organisation, Muhammadiyah, issued a fatwa banning smoking. Though not legal, the religious ruling does put pressure on smokers in the world's most populous Muslim nation. There has been a furious reaction to the fatwa and many have questioned whether it was influenced by grant money received from American anti-smoking groups. Muhammadiyah officials have denied any connection. "Cigarette companies have also agreed that in terms of health, smoking can cause cancer, heart attacks, impotence, pregnancy and fatal disorders. The Fiqh Council of North America (an association of Muslims who interpret Islamic law on the North American continent) issued a ruling (fatwa) earlier this week that says Muslims shouldn't go through full body scanners since this violate Islamic rules on modesty. Nihad Awad heads the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and their purpose is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties and to promote justice and mutual understanding.

Now, the reason why there aren't many more such examples, though there are quite a few, is because prior to Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri issuing this fatwa, his colleague, who was also from the same way of thinking, was assassinated in Pakistan, was killed by a suicide bomber in a mosque where all the congregants who were praying were also blown to smithereens because he had the guts to simply give a sermon in that mosque condemning suicide bombings. And so this is why many people are scared, because it takes guts, I tell you, to go into Pakistan and try and challenge these extremists. That's a country that doesn't have much rule of law. On November 22, 2008, the National Fatwa Council announced that Yoga is 'haram' in Islam and in one fell swoop, Muslims will no longer be allowed to practice it -- once it is gazetted as law. Yoga attracted what is arguably, unwarranted attention from no less than the NFC as a result of an opinion from an Islamic scholar that Yoga, could be 'haram' in Islam because it could cause Muslims to deviate from his or her faith. This decision drew criticisms from Muslim and non-Muslim practitioners who have felt real physical and mental benefits of Yoga through its physical exercise and meditative elements. The Fatwa or religious decree once gazetted, will become enforceable and challenges the rights of individuals of a particular faith from practising what is essentially an ancient form of exercise. The reason for the ban -- only that Yoga has Hindu roots. Malaysiakini talks to Yoga instructors and practitioners on their views towards the ban. We also talked to Norhayati Kaprawi of Sisters-In-Islam and Yusri Mohamad of Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) for their views on the Fatwa. Yoga attracted what is arguably, unwarranted attention from no less than the NFC as a result of an opinion from an Islamic scholar that Yoga, could be 'haram' in Islam because it could cause Muslims to deviate from his or her faith. They answered questions posed by their supporters. The following questions and answers were exchanged between Mesbah-Yazdi and some of his supports regarding the recent charges of rape and torture done to those arrested in the post-election unrest: Q: Is obtaining confession by applying emotional and physical pressure valid? A: Getting confession from any person who is against the Velayet-e-faghih (supreme leader) is valid under any condition. Q: Is obtaining confession valid by drugging the prisoner with addictive substances, opiates, and other drugs? A: Getting confession from any person who is against the Velayet-e-faghih (supreme leader) is valid under any condition. Q: Can rape be used as a means of obtaining confession? A.The necessary caution is for the interrogator to perform the Vozoo (the act of cleansing mandated by Islam before praying) first and say prayers while raping the prisoner.
