Been away for pretty much six weeks , lots of stuff. Berlin which was hot in the first das gaff.

hot in berlin

Highlights of which included hanging out with these wacky  atompunk sound artists.

And watching Prince Kong kissing babies.(pics to follow)

Within ten minutes of walking into said second gaff(above) , I found a Cd  of this Seeed Berlin anthem(below) which I’d lost a while ago and been looking for.Which correctly boded well for our stay there. Highlights of this stay included getting into Berghain on this visit (didn’t dig my beard, hat and dark glasses last time, the squares) and watching Richie !Kaboogie convert to HiNRG disco( no pics ’cause they’re banned in Berghain for that very reason) and tile graff artist Dj Tile cutters  exploits, in which he repeatedly failed to get into any clubs(’cept one in the end).

In other news, with me on the radio show at 10.30 tonight and streaming here  is ( ex renowned D&B dj and now renowned Grime Dj)   Dj Bpm, an Irish Dj based in London. She blew up the K club(next -Lorn) on Thursday and did this great mix for us a while ago.

Also expect some of the tunes from this mix which is blowing my mind as I write.

Mike Paradinas Footwork/Juke Mix by Mike Paradinas (A.K.A. Μ-Ziq) on Mixcloud

Also I meant to blog this ages ago(but was on me hols), but if you haven’t heard Dj Gaz le Rock’s punk and garage show on 2xfm you’re missing out on some of the best radio RTE have put out in ages.

2fm Loving Room Floor 19 sept 2010 by Dj Gaz Le Rock Finally here’s the third installment in the ‘Wallets Full of Blood’ - Irish economic crash zombie movie series - ‘Roscommon Death Trip’ ’The injustice of time - rendered obsolete.’Rain falls on the snow. The Contagion has taken hold. Ghosts from the old Dead Republic are emerging everywhere as the day of judgement approaches. On Black Tuesday a guilt ridden political functionary runs from his job burying bodies in the city. He is tortured by voices of reproach as he journeys towards home. He recounts the history of his dealings with Fingers - a boss ‘who made the old boss look like Mother Teresa’.Meanwhile, back in the city, amid the spiraling negativity, Fingers and his acolytes lay the foundations for a new Easter Rising.

January 29 2010, The Cavern - Isaac Butts. (opposite Busaras), 10:30pm - 2:30am

Squire of Gothos (Coin Operated), Schemeboy (Ninja Columbo), DJ Rodfather (!Kaboogie)

Following on from the massive 4th birthday party gig recently, !Kaboogie will be bringin’ plenty more heft with this tasty event which sees the Irish debut of UK bassline rave-steppers THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS, along with a welcome return from London’s SCHEME BOY. With support from !K-head DJ RODFATHER, this promises to be a right rowdy demon of a night. Sheeeeeeeeeet!

THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS (Coin Operated Records / Electrostimulation Records / Tigerbeat 6)

Hailing from Sheffield, The Squire Of Gothos are one of the most original acts to emerge from the bassline sound of recent years. Their unique brand of raved-up, glitched-out, filthy bassline wonkyness demonstrates their knowledge in the fine art of dancefloor destruction. , these messers have quickly built up a dedicated fanbase through monster live shows and quality releases on Electrostimulation Records and Coin Operated Records, the latter being the well hefty ‘Clam Smasher EP’. A string of free mixes, some of the finest of 2009, have since solidified their position as masters of bounce. This gig sees them hitting Irish shores for the first time. Nnot to be missed.

!Kaboogie presents: Fourth Birthday bash!, January 15 2010, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey St., Dublin 1, Dublin Ireland

January 15 2010, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey St., Dublin 1, 10pm

!Kaboogie celebrates four years of bringing the futhermucking BASS to Dublin with a whopper, two-floor line-up in the Twisted Pepper on Friday 15 January. With Terror Danjah, Wadadda, Moutpiece, Gramophone Disco and North Strand Kontra Band

The ground floor of the Twisted Pepper will be a little different to the (un)usual !Kaboogie fare, with Gramophone Disco hosting the evenings festivities and also doing a little decoration job on the place! Supremo Dublin punkers Moutpiece will be lashing it out, followed by the jump-up specialists North Strand Kontra Band.

Down in the bassment we’ll have the mighty Terror Danjah, hot off his recently released “Gremlinz” album on Planet Mu. Expect grime that’d put even Mr Muscle into a panic. Further bass treats come all the way over from Germany, with the dubbed out skank and bounce of Wadadda. Tactical bass support on both floors from the lovely !Kaboogie residents.

The night shall be kicking off at ten bells. Cos we is soooo nice to you, it’s only a MERE FIVER in before 11, then a tenner afterwards. Come down and celebrate with us, it’s gonna be mental buzz!

Moutpiece“..Dublin garage spazmo rockers mouthpiece, a fiery collective of absurdity and madness rolled into a rock n’roll machine of power.Loud, fast, obnoxious bursts of guitar fuelled mayhem, the band was formed by Gaz Moutpiece and Derek Gihad, armed with a blistering bag of riffs and a voracious thirst for everything, they recruited Tommy Trousers on bass duties and set off on the road. Tours of Holland, Ireland and festival appearances ensued and the spazmo garage punk rock n’roll was brought to the masses, who enjoyed it immensely.Conzo Hercules joined to add more guitar mayhem into the mix and now with a new album on the streets, Moutpiece are set to go into hyper drive, so don’t miss ‘em…

Turns out Moutpiece can’t play due to snow related injury.

Bogdan flyer

The man Bogdan playing- His music is fun, fucked up, charming , innocent and banging(at the same time!) and my favourite of the wave that included; Sqaurepusher, Mike Paradinis, Aphex et.

The last time he played, he was drunk /out of it-

all the idm heads were getting really pissed off, he kept falling on
the table with his laptop and rolling around,
kept getting pulled off, hitting play again, then falling again, as portions of
the crowed got more pissed off.

I was cheering.

one of me fav gigs ever!

Pleased to be on the bill, I’ll try and lash up a mini mix of his music before the gig.

 chris de burch - crusader

In all the talk and theory about Micheal Jackson, one thing that has been missed is the genius of Chis De Burgh. He was also in the charts at the same time as thriller and is played at weddings just as much.

And, like how many music greats(Jackson included, even though he’s dead) can claim to have fathered a miss world(a miss world!) and to have survived the sultry temptations of worldwide fame and bad staff in order to hold their families together. No mean achievement.

16hrtz  and Oshroom are Irish producers who get the genius of Chris and understanding his Argentinian links, they gives him a beats and bass mash/update worthy of Cumbia’s best rich kid exploiters scenters while avoiding the risks of exploitation associated with working with such delicate and great  material .

Lady Grew (all pictures by Aoife from the !Kaboogie records 01 Squidge ep launch  last friday)

A big couple of weeks in Irish Bass/dance music. Two releases from Irish artists on Irish labels, on vinyl. One on Alphabet set the other the first release on !Kaboogie, lauched two weeks ago and last week.

Prince Kong blazing on both. Here’s how Boomkat put it (who have sold out of their first order all ready)-
Good Lord! What the hell is this?!?…-Prince Kong and T-woc have just shocked our afternoon to the core with a blinding pair of future Dub cuts seemingly beamed from another planet. Prince Kong’s ‘Crossroads’ sounds like The Bug inna deep war with Babylon, sending hordes of dreadlocked bass disciples armed with industrial kickdrums and razor-edged rave signals to bring down any System that tries it, only better.
For me Prince Kong is a totally original Irish producer with a transnational sound. Bringing on MC driven bass and barbed wire riddims to scarify while avoiding the usual traps of imitating Detroit, London, Aphex bloody twin or whatever.

Mc Rodrigo

He’s had a power and originality from the first time I heard him in Eustace St a few years ago(first dublin gig I think) This has come to the fore at a series of gigs over the last two years. The sound getting weightier and skankier with every gig. Dancing to it you’re caught between the bass rooting you to the floor and the high end jerking you up.The show is now a Tour de force with MCs chatting and chanting over shuddering sounds.

Working with MCs like Warrior Queen and Jah balance and legends like Eccleton Jarrett and more recently focusing on local talent like Lady grew and MC Rodrigo. Occaisionally I’ve been asked by local bass younglings to recount the history of Irish beats but that story is of depressing failure so I’ve avoided writing about it. Refreshingly, this feels like success. And with Alphabet set and the launch of !Kaboogie records hopefully more to follow.

Here are a couple of exclusives. The first a 4×4 stomper with a bass hovering like a UFO over bouncy loops. The second unashamed breakcore with soul.

The live set sounds amazing, sounding vinyl mastered which is something for a live set. A good sound track to the Irish Babylon crisis.

Here’s a mix of some of the tunes from the recent rough !Kaboogie Sampler of Irish beats. I did it a few weeks ago for the radio, but the cd deck kept messing up so it kept getting held over. I thought I’d better post it before it’s old news. There are some gratuitous tracks  -  Kid Cudi, the amazing farmers anthem from Collie Buddz and some Irish tracks that aren’t on the sampler, but you get the idea.

PROCESSING>>
RomaeuropaFAKEFactory draws on the Romaeuropa Web Factory competition to embrace a series of reflexions and practices focused on the issues of digital rights and information ownership.

DISTORSION>>
RomaeuropaFakeFactory is an international competition allowing its participants to do everything that is forbidden by the rules of the Romaeuropa Web Factory competition, subverting its logics.

CUT, COPY, PASTE>>
According to the rules of the Romaeuropa Web Factory competition , produced by the Romaeuropa Foundation and by Telecom Italia SpA, participation is not allowed to those artists creating their works using remix, mash-up and manipulative techniques on pre-existing content. Furthermore, to participate, the artists have to sign a legal disclaimer making them give up all the rights on their artworks: indefinitely, exclusively, for free, and also allowing the contest producers to freely edit, remix, mash-up, commercialize.

The Romaeuropa Foundation and Telecom SpA can remix. Artists can not.

CUT-UP>>
The overcoming of originality as space for production and its circumbscription in terms of multinational property - more than the real protection of the author’s rights - is used in this context as a critique to a conservative practice of cultural promotion that is not able to grasp the possibilities offered by the intersections of the technological, cultural, social and economical-political planes, enabled by contemporary technologies.

MORPHING>>
This competition is addressed to all forms of creative profiles and to the experts of legislative disciplines with a specific predilection for intellectual property related subjects, inviting them to submit their artworks on the theme “Freedom to Remix”.

>>HOW-TO<<
The four categories in the competition:

- 100Cuts: videoart [ http://www.romaeuropa.org/videoart.html ]
- 100Samples: electronic music [ http://www.romaeuropa.org/music.html ]
- 100Quotes: literature [ http://www.romaeuropa.org/words.html ]
- LawArt [ http://www.romaeuropa.org/law.html ] , a brand new creative discipline dedicated to law experts and jurisprudence amateurs, whose works will be constituted by remix and production of legal texts regulating intellectual property

The works will be the object of a research, of public debate and will be collected in a catalogue together with the critical and legal texts. Furthermore, they will be supported by RomaEuropaFAKEFactory’s communicational apparatus. A public voting system will also be set up on ArtsBlog.it [ http://www.artsblog.it ] so that the general audience will be able to vote its favourite work in the 4 sections, thus declaring an audience-proclaimed winner.

RomaEuropaFAKEFactory will be finalized into a public happening during which the exhibition of all the generated content will take place.

Here’s the Banker getting on board the train to mashville with- ‘Gash Up’, an extraodinary  mash/edit/arrangement of -   M.I.A. - Galang Acapella, Aphex Twin - Jynweythek Ylow, Shackleton - Tin Foil Sky, The Banker and Beethoven - Adagio Sostenuto. Check the way he uses the piano from Beethoven’s Adagio against M.I.A’s voice then segues into the Aphex twin piano…gosh.

Girl Talk in Dublin

Speaking of mashes here’s a great, interesting and thought provoking piece by Nick Sylvester and W. David Marx on Girl Talk. For those who don’t know, Girl Talk does fairly dense  mashup albums.(He’s playing Dublin in March, I think I may even be supporting him)

Quote

…the extent to which the music he’s working with is so portable, so building-block ready, makes it seem like he’s not making art so much as merely following industry directions: Step by step, like he’s putting together a Lego spaceship. There is no violence in this process, in other words; he’s hardly repurposing much of anything. Instead it’s like a video game in which Gillis has found the warp level — yet keep in mind, somebody somewhere had to program that warp level precisely so that it would be discovered.

On a boat on the Shannon last summer listening to the Girl Talk album with my friend the film maker, Eamonn, I got him excited by suggesting that a program could be easily written to mix and mash tunes by their key and Bpm. I’ve since came across Mixmeister which pretty much does this and it’s a matter of months before it or something similar is used as a plug in for media players.

The piece makes some interesting points and is a good read, though quoting Adorno to the effect that pop isn’t art muddies the waters. The pop he was talking about was Jazz and tin pan alley etc. It’s also a bit unclear what their problem with Girl Talk is - that he claims to be an artist? That he’s ‘only’ a technician?

The problem here is the usual one that the word art doesn’t actually mean anything.

From the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy

Generally, art is a human activity, made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions. Beyond this description, there is no general agreed-upon definition of art.

-So every thing apart from work then.

Art used to glorify God, now it glorifies the market. Either everything is art or nothing is. I’d go with nothing. Good stuff, bad stuff, stuff I like, stuff that suits my agenda, but don’t go putting wings or halos on any of it.

It’s important to bear in mind the contexts of mashes and the processes that produce them and with that the fact that they create their own contexts. I remember in the days of Boomselection  thinking mashes were done, but they keep going, to the point they are now a model for new technologies. Saying they are soulless is a bit of a so what?- That isn’t nescessariliy a bad thing. We’ve just had over twenty years of dancing to a drum machine and searching for the smallest atom of funk…which has been good fun.

To what extent is Coltrane’s  ‘Favourite things’ a mash? Anyway read the piece, it’ll get you thinking. More mash theory here.

In other news here’s a link to the front page on Indymedia about a mash(projecting images on a building) I took part in on Monday. Organised by the above mentioned Eamonn, It took place outside the Israeli embassy.
