Conditions via Grannymar, today at 14:00

Friday LBC and the topic was down to me.  I chose: Conditions I have them. You have them. We all have them! Life will not work without them. There are conditions in which we live, those by which we live and even conditions some of us have to learn to live with. I hope I find you in good condition... Similar posts

I’m Still Here via The Anti-Room, today at 13:57

image The world of finance isn’t the only place where women are treated dismissively in the work place. Television executive Helen Rahilly tells of her own experiences. The outrage over the Price Waterhouse Coopers’ email yesterday set me thinking. Now it didn’t surprise me one bit that a bunch of idiotic blokes compounded their priapic prurience by cascading their sexual stupidity (complete with grossly insulting slang for their female colleagues) for all to see. Nor was it the assumption that this 17 strong sleazy band of brothers thought this “top ten totty” email was acceptable behaviour in the workplace. What got me going was that newspapers reprinted the photographs of the 13 women thereby inviting their own readers to partake in their own version of... Similar posts

Orange Juice – Coals To Newcastle via State Magazine, today at 13:48

When Orange Juice split onstage in 1985, first on the bill at a miners’ benefit gig in Brixton Academy, grown men openly wept. Even Smash Hits lamented the sudden passing of such a great group before the venue was even full. Thus, Glasgow’s finest band exited much like they’d arrived – under most people’s radar. Coals To Newcastle serves to right that wrong. Its seven discs lovingly wrap up Orange Juice’s six-year recording career in meticulous detail, with remastered versions of all their albums and a host of priceless extras. Considering they paved the way for bands like The Smiths, Haircut 100, The Wedding Present, Belle And Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand and countless others, this set belatedly repays a considerable historic debt. Formed in suburban Glasgow in 1978, few... Similar posts

NoNonsense.ie shortlisted for 2010 Eircom Spiders Awards via The No Nonsense blog, today at 13:45

image Certainly not a load of nonsense but the happy truth in fact that No Nonsense Insurance has been nominated in the Financial Services category of this year’s Eircom Golden Spiders Awards. The Eircom Spiders are an annual event honouring Irish organisations and individuals for their ‘outstanding achievements online and celebrating the successes of the Irish internet and digital media’. The awards aim to recognise and showcase online excellence in Ireland and are considered an important benchmark of distinction of web-based business strategies. Needless to say, we’re delighted to be shortlisted in the first instance and would like to point out, should we win, we’ll keep our feet firmly planted on the ground – promise! Well, maybe a little victory... Similar posts

silence via PaulineMcLynn.com, today at 13:44

We observed the 2 minute silence for Remembrance Day at work on the set of SHAMELESS – many thanks to our First Assistant Director, Simon Turner, for calling it. There was a time in Ireland when it was very unpopular to wear the poppy at all let alone with the pride it deserves and it’s only truly recently that it has become quite rightly accepted as a very legitimate thing to do. Both sides of my family came out of a garrison town in the North West of Ireland and men on my mother’s side fought and died in the British Army. It is humbling and important to remember them. We live as we do because of their bravery. I’m off to Kilkenny now for the Kilkenomics Festival – get there if you can as it will be a cracking weekend of comedy and economics. I’m... Similar posts

Cap Pas Cap – Haunted Light via State Magazine, today at 13:43

Since the successful release of their very impressive Not Not is Fine EP back in 2006, fans of Dublin three piece, Cap Pas Cap, have been waiting for what promised to be a stomper of a debut album. The bad news for anyone who was a fan of the band’s stripped down minimalist approach to things, with its bare vocals, banging cowbells and three note baselines – is: Haunted Light, their debut album is a shift away from that first EP, and the journey Cap Pas Cap have undertaken seems to have brought the group backwards if anything. The two main problems that seems to haunt this album (no pun intended), is the absence of former front man Gavin Duffy, and the move away from a new wave minimalist sound to an overdrive of saturated arrangements that aspire to reach the heights of The... If you only do one thing this weekend … via Pursued by a Bear, today at 13:32

Listen: If music be the food of love then this weekend there’ll be more getting it on around the country than at a Marvin Gaye tribute night. Swedish songsters Dungen are in Whelan’s on Saturday for a rare live appearance, with firm support from local lads Halves, and if you manage to make it to Monday without blowing all your cash, crack Brit outfit Foals will be showing the Olympia who is boss, following their storming set at this year’s Electric Picnic. However, gig of the weekend has got to be the revolving triumvirate of And So I Watch You From Afar, Fionn Regan and Jape. They kicked off proceedings in the Roisin Dubh last night, tonight Cork will be playing host to the tour, and Saturday night sees them take Limerick by storm, before the rest of the country gets its go next... Call of Duty breaks its own record, Castro not pleased via Igniq.com, today at 13:32

Black Ops has broken the record for one day sales, set last year by Modern Warfare. The game sold 5.6 million units when it went on sale on Tuesday, trouncing the previous 4.7 million record held by Modern Warfare. Activision are calling it the ‘biggest entertainment launch ever’: “Not too many years back it would have been unfathomable that the biggest entertainment launch would be a video game two years in a row,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “You are delivering not just a gaming experience but a cinematic experience as well,” Hirshberg said. “The characters are emerging as the protagonists of the story.” New ‘Call of Duty’ blasts last year’s sales record The game has also outsold Modern... Arena Weapons and Armour available for honour pre-WoW: Cataclysm via Igniq.com, today at 13:16

image I’ve been playing WoW a lot in the run-up to the release of Cataclysm and not a lot of the players on my realm seemed to realise that you can now buy the Wrathful arena weapons and armour for honour. The items appear unavailable when you check the vendor: they are greyed out and have the red text ‘Requires battleground rating of 1800 personal and team arena rating of 1800′. But if you click the items you can buy them anyway with no problems provided you have enough honour. I’ve been gearing up all my different alts this way for the past week or so and it appears the greyed out text and requirements on the items is just a bug. The items are at the goblin arena vendor in the sewers in Dalaran; all of the items are available to buy except the top tier arena weapons... Similar posts

A Revelation: Evangelical Retail via gaelick, today at 13:00

image Tomorrow, 13th November, a new shop is due to open in Dublin. Ordinarily not too remarkable (other than perhaps the fact that such a large clothing store is opening while Ireland’s economy is going down the toilet). But this particular retailer is a little more interesting than that. Forever 21 (I won’t be linking) is a USA-based retailer that sells cheap, slutty trendy clothes to the young folk. It also sells a lot more. The chain’s ethics and practices have been called into question on several occasions over the past decade. In 2001, manufacturing workers staged a boycott of the company over wages and working conditions. The matter went to court, but was settled before a ruling was issued. Without formally admitting any wrongdoing, the company undertook to ensure... Similar posts
