The RDG was founded in1983 by Socialist Workers Party members, who had been part of the SWP’s Republican Faction. Our ideas about revolutionary democracy were developed in conflict with the economism of the SWP.

Revolutionary democrats promote militant republicanism and in particular a federal republic of England Scotland Wales, and for a united Ireland. Republicanism is not primarily about the queen or monarch. It is about the power behind the throne and about power to the people.

 The political organisation of the working class
A party is essential if we want to get rid of capitalism. As communists we are in favour of a new International or World Party. We recognise the contribution of the first four Internationals associated with Marx, Lenin and Trotsky. Today we need a Fifth. How we get there depends on class struggle in each country across the world.

Publishing revolutionary democratic ideas
In the early 1990’s we produced a regular bulletin to explain our ideas. We identified ourselves as a faction of the SWP. We were developing our ideas through criticism of the politics of the SWP.

 Publishing revolutionary democratic ideas
From the mid 1990’s we formed an alliance with another small organisation, the CPGB (Provisional Central Committee). We worked together in the Socialist Labour Party and in the Socialist Alliance. We decided to support their paper Weekly Worker and published our ideas there.
