8-year-old girl critical after crash on the South Eastern Freeway

A CRASH involving a car driving on the wrong side of the South Eastern Freeway has left an eight-year-old girl fighting for her life.

The girl was a passenger in the car which was travelling west on the wrong side of the freeway about 11.30pm.

It crashed head-on into another car near the Bridgewater turnoff.

A police spokesman said it was not clear why the female driver was on the wrong side of the freeway, but her condition is stable.

The girl is in the Women's and Children's Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The occupants of the other car  a man, a pregnant woman and another eight-year-old girl were not seriously injured.

Police are investigating the crash.
