High heels causing serious harm to women's bodies, study shows

IT'S enough to make Sex and the City's Carrie shake in her stilettos. The havoc that high heels can wreak on the body is no secret, but new research has sunk the boot in even further.

A study by researchers at Iowa State University found tottering on high heels for prolonged periods could cause serious problems in the knees and joints.

Sex and the City-style shoes send shock waves from the heel up the body and put massive pressure on the inside of the knee, researchers found.

They said this could contribute to joint degeneration and osteoarthritis.

Danielle Barkema and human movement expert Phil Martin used sensors, accelerometers, cameras and lab equipment to test the damage caused by heels.

Fifteen women undertook walking trials in three different heel heights - flat, 5cm and 9cm.

The study discovered "heel height changes walking characteristics such as slower speeds and shorter stride lengths", according to Science Daily.

When will these individuals get the message - those wearing / struggling to walk in these high heels. They look silly pretending to walk with confidence in the vain of fashion.

There really is nothing sexy about somebody walking along with a painful grimace on her face.

As a careworker for the elderly I have seen many ladies who wore high heel shoes all their lives. For the best part most of them had little mobility or none at all. And the deformity of the foot is unbelievable. It looks painfully and by all accounts is Look out ladies who constantly wear high heels you will suffer inreversible pain and deformity one day - which will be about the time you decide to retire and want to go out and enjoy life. After what I have seen I have never worn high heels again. Ignore it at your peril.

I wore very high stilettos every day from the age of 14 until I was in my late 40's, giving them up only because I gave up work and took to "runners" and thongs. I have suffered no ill effects and am in much better health than my friends of the same age.

and in my case.... big toe joint. As someone who wore high heels constantly I now cannot wear heels as the pressure they exert on the big toe joint means I can not walk at all within a short space of time. And to think how I used to laugh at people who warned me.

What do they mean by "knees and joints"? I thought the knee was a joint!

There is no reason for high heel shoes to even exist. You can't walk in them or drive in them and the people who wear them are just slaves to fashion. They should be banned.

The modern western equivalent of footbinding. Especially since most womens shoes are far too narrow for the natural shape of feet but we persist until our feet are deformed enough to fit the shoes then congratulate ourselves on how well our shoes fit.

I agree heels are sexy and they complete a lovely dress or a great pair of jeans, I miss wearing my heels, I moved to the country and all the paths are gravel or not at all so its joggers and work boots over here, I'm soooooooooo glad I've decided on a move back to the city and all 64 pairs of my heels are coming with me whoo hoo (ps J of Adelaide I'm not 20 and wearing them in the vain of fashion, I'm 44 and being dressed nicely including great heels makes me feel and look like a woman)

I cannot wear high heels at all. Firstly I cant walk in them and secondly if I can walk in them I am in agony within about 15 minutes. I have a serious problem with parents who let their little ones wear them! I recently saw a girl who would not have been any older than 7 at the supermarket tottering around on about 2 inch heels, with makeup and carrying her handbag. WTF?

I've tried and tried but I just can't do it. After finding myself walking barefoot through the city because it just hurt so much to wear my heels I gave up. Flats all the way for me now and no more pain!
