• This Week in Vimeo! June 14th

    Sup y'all!

If you're like me, you've been to some pretty amazing shows this Summer, and there are only more to come!

That's why this week, I've decided to feature the super tubular concert videographer, Ray Concepcion.

Ray has been a Vimeo member since April 2008, and in that time he's shared 114 videos! His trademark is hazy, dreamlike video of live music, capturing the vibes of the bands perfectly. A couple of my favorites are this one of Toro y Moi using 3D glasses over the lens of his camera (rad!), and this one of Real Estate, the lo-fi grain punctuating the lo-fi sounds (chill!).

To catch a glimpse of what other videographers capture at shows, or just to get a taste of that set you missed, check out the aptly named Concerts channel, featuring more artfully recorded live shows. This one of Neon Indian is highly recommended.

For those who prefer live music where literally anywhere is a concert hall, La Blogotheque has opened up the door for anyone to submit their own take away shows with the Everyone's Take Away Show group! You can check out some of Blogotheque's own videos there too, but don't skip submissions like this that were inspired by them!

Hope to see you guys at the front row soon,
    Taylor

By the way, if you created an amazing music video that you think is worthy of being called the best on the internet, we are now accepting submissions for the Vimeo Awards, and have a specific category dedicated to music videos!

    Hey gang,

If you've got a case of the Mondays, the only antidote you need is a healthy serving of This Week in Vimeo!

To start things off right, allow me to introduce you to Sean Pecknold, aka Grandchildren.

Sean is responsible for creating a stunning music video for each of my favorite songs. Check out what he cooked up for Fleet Foxes with his stop motion masterpiece, Mykonos. The video he made for Grizzly Bear's While You Wait for the Others also succeeds in blowing my mind.

For further brain expansion, I recommend taking a look at the Kinetic Art Projects Channel, which features performative sculptures captured on camera. Machines that Almost Fall Over is one of my favorites. That reminds me, we are now accepting submissions for the Vimeo Awards, and have a specific category dedicated to captured videos.

London based online arts and music magazine, Sweet and Sound has a happening group of experimental videos in the running to be featured in their 'Best of Vimeo' series. For a sampling of what the Sweet and Sound Vimeo Group has to offer, take a look at Sunset.

Okay friends, I hope that was enough to shake you from your Monday funk.
    Love and digital hugs,
    Katie

  • Submissions now open for the Vimeo Awards!

In case you missed it, we recently announced the first-ever Vimeo Festival and Awards to celebrate and honor the best of creative online video. With the unprecedented level of creativity, skill and innovation coming from online video today, it's high time to give back to the independent creators who choose the Internet to distribute and to share their work through sites like Vimeo.

This being the first year of the Festival and Awards, we are going all out. We have secured awesome judges to evaluate your work in a variety of categories and a jam-packed two day festival of events and education to let everyone join in on the fun. An Awards show will culminate the Festival in an entertaining evening of celebration, honoring the individual category winners. Award winners will be heavily promoted on Vimeo and the winner of the Best Video award across all categories will win a $25,000 grant to produce new work as well. That's a lot of moolah, because we're committed to supporting the creative community, and want to do our part to enable exciting new artists.

Starting today, submissions are now open worldwide for the Vimeo Awards. These awards are open to ALL videos online, not just videos on Vimeo. So even if you uploaded it to another site, or have yet to upload that new piece you have been slaving over, we want to see it! You can submit as many videos as you want in a variety of different categories. You can learn more and read the Official Rules at Vimeoawards.com

To submit your work, visit vimeoawards.com/submit. We can't wait to see what you've got!

    Love,

    Vimeo

    Yo Vimeo!

This week in Vimeo starts on a Tuesday!

    Say hello to ofa.

ofa recently made a splash on the site with his video BREUKELEN, a beautifully composed portrait of the fine borough of Brooklyn (Breukelen in Dutch), which also happens to be the home of precisely 84.5% of the Vimeo Staff. In addition to sharing his own creations, ofa pops up all over the site with an impressive array of likes and subscriptions.

The four years you spend in high school can be trying times. As we all know, though, trying times can be the inspiration for great art. Fortunately user Mark Fleming has created the ultimate outlet for teenage angst and awkwardness: The High School Filmmakers Channel.

With the proliferation of mobile devices that shoot video, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of videos shot vertically versus horizontally. There’s now a group for some of the finer specimens of this growing genre of videos. So, turn your monitor on its side and enjoy!

Have a great week everyone! And if you’re looking for some more Groups and Channels, check out Vimeo Categories.

    Hey there Vimeo!

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend, luckily the weather here in NYC was pretty good. Without further ado, let's dig into some Vimeo gems!

This week I'd like to feature Vimeo member Pixel Viking also known as Rico Bergholdt Hansen. Rico hails from Denmark and in addition to being extremely active in the Vimeo community he makes great videos that really show the natural beauty of his region of Scandinavia. Rico uses a wide range of equipment and editing skills to make his wonderful videos. I would recommend starting your exploration of his videos here and here. Have fun, he's a very friendly guy.

Pueblos de Espaa - Cities of Spain in HD
The featured Channel this week is Pueblos de Espana- Cities of Spain in HD. Even if you've never been to Spain with this Channel you'll feel like you're taking a stroll through the lovely countryside. There are some truly breathtaking places to explore! For starters soak up Catalunya!

The Cymatics Group is all about taking sound waves and through various methods visualizing it. Or to get more precise as per Wikipedia, "Cymatics is the study of wave phenomena. It is typically associated with the physical patterns produced through the interaction of sound waves in a medium." Go ahead and reflect upon the profound wonder of waves with this Group or throw a dance party with some great visuals and funky sounds.

Also, we have a very exciting announcement to make next week, so stay tuned! Have a great week everyone.

    High five,

    Dan

Hello movers and shakers of Vimeo land!

We thought we'd give you a weekend project that would tap into your grooving capabilities.
Inspired by this video from lonelysandwich, and this one from Robin Cantrell, we'd like to challenge you, our brave camera-loving pals, to make a video of yourself or a friend (or yourself and a friend!) dancing in public. Make sure to submit your video to the Weekend Project Group. Please note that the Community Staff will approve videos for inclusion into the Group and will also be selecting the winning videos.

  • Come to the Video Art & Experimental Film Festival

    Hey Everyone,

If you're looking for something to do this weekend and you're in the New York area, I have something for you to add to your calendar! It's the Video Art & Experimental Film Festival and it's happening this Saturday, May 22 at Tribeca Cinemas. Vimeo is a proud sponsor of the event this year, which consists of a two hour screening of videos you'd typically see in galleries and art museums, but projected onto the silver screens at Tribeca Cinemas. Afterward, there will be a 45 minute panel discussion that our very own Blake Whitman is a part of. He and several other illustrious names in the video art world will be discussing the relationship between online communities, like Vimeo, that are dedicated to video art and experimental film versus offline spaces such as galleries, museums and film festivals.

The Video Art & Experimental Film Festival folks gave us a sweet deal and created promotional code for the Vimeo community!
Code: vimeo (It will give you $10 off the ticket price!)

Visit the Video Art & Experimental Film Festival website to reserve seats and purchase tickets.

    Hope to see you there!
