  • The 1000 genomes project

The 1000 Genomes Project aims to provide a deep characterization of human genome sequence variation as a foundation for investigating the relationship between genotype and phenotype. This resource will aid our understanding of the role of genetic variation in human history, evolution and disease. This Nature Special accompanies the publication of the result of the pilot phase of the project, designed to develop and compare different strategies for genome-wide sequencing with high-throughput platforms. The site will be updated with companion papers as they become available and for more information listen to this week's free Nature Podcast. Image: Andy Martin

  • Autumn books

In our seasonal selection of book reviews, cosmologist Lee Smolin finds Roger Penrose's latest idea that the universe is one of a succession "deliciously absurd", while writer Steve Silberman is moved by Oliver Sacks's poignant account of losing his vision through cancer. And others muse on tiger conservation, why we should learn to love weeds, the birth and future of forensic science and the promise of quantum teleportation. Image: G. Potenza
