Ashoura mud-rubbing Ritual in Bijar, Kurdistan Province of Iran - Ashoura is a period of intense grief and mourning. The word ashura simply means tenth in Arabic language, the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. In the Iranian World, a Scholarly Guide to Everything - You can't find an entry for Ehsan Yarshater in the Encyclopaedia Iranica - after all, the printed volumes have reached only up to K, and the online entries for letters farther down the alphabet are incomplete.
