Steve Murphy has been charged with a 2006 E.L.F. action in Pasadena, CA. and was recently sentenced to 5 years on April 5, 2010 after previously pleading guilty.
The complaint accused Steve of allegedly decommissioning a tractor and placing an incendiary device in a housing development construction site in the name of the Earth Liberation Front. Read the complaint.
Today Steve received a sentence of 60 months (5 years) and three years of supervised release. This is an incredibly difficult time for Steve and his loved ones. He is currently being held at the CDC in San Bernardino. We have no idea how long it will take for Steve to be transferred to a federal facility. Awaiting a transfer can be a particularly stressful time - Steve has no idea where he will end up, although we are hoping that he will be in Texas so he can be closer to his partner. Please take a minute to write Steve a note of support. His current address is:
MURPHY, STEVE JAMES
0910300841
CENTRAL DETENTION CENTER
630 EAST RIALTO AVE
SAN BERNARDINO, CA 92408
We will keep you updated about Steve's whereabouts once he starts the
transfer process.

Steve's sentencing is this MONDAY! (April 5th)
Please attend if you can!
312 N. Spring St.
Los Angeles, CA
Courtroom #8 (Judge Manuel Real)
1:30 pm.
This is perhaps the most important way you can support Steve. Standing in a courtroom alone can be a very scary experience. It would be wonderful if we could pack the courtroom with supporters so Steve will know he's not alone. If at all possible, please plan on coming to Steve's sentencing. Sentencing set for April 5. The hearing will be at the Courthouse located at: 312 N. Spring St. in Los Angeles. Courtroom #8 (Judge Manuel Real) at 1:30 p.m. Please dress accordingly.
Steve's girlfriend will be in town from Sunday to Wednesday and requests that no visitation attempts are made during this time. Steve is only allowed one visit per day and they wish to spend this time together. Please don't let this deter you from making future visits to Steve! He is all alone in San Bernardino and friendly faces are always welcome. Note that when you make an appointment, if you can't make it, please call and cancel the appointment. Otherwise, Steve is left waiting in a holding room for hours only to be let down when no one comes. Always keep that in mind when making appointments.
* Steve is good on books at the moment and is currently requesting people donate for stamps, envelopes, paper, etc. instead.
Hope to see you at sentencing!
Thanks to you all,
Steve's Support Crew

Now an update on Steve
Hello everyone,
As many of you know, Steve accepted a plea in January. He is currently facing 5 years in prison, and he needs your support during this difficult time. There are a few different things you can do.
-Write Steve a letter. Letters help Steve keep his spirits up and stay connected to his communities outside of prison. Send Steve a postcard, a letter, a picture of your favorite place. It will only be a few minutes out of your day - but it will mean a lot to Steve.
Steve's mailing address is:
MURPHY, STEVE JAMES
0910300841
CENTRAL DETENTION CENTER
630 EAST RIALTO AVE
SAN BERNARDINO, CA 92408
Please remember that all of Steve's mail is read by the authorities and anything we say can absolutely be used against him. Do not mention his case or anything related to it. For a more complete description of mail regulations,
-Donate. Steve still needs money to help pay for things like food and stamps from commissary and phone calls to friends and loved ones. Please consider donating - even the smallest amount helps. You can donate through PayPal on Steve's website, or you can put money directly on Steve's commissary (for more information on this, please scroll to the bottom of this email).
-Books. Good reading material can be critically important for folks in jail. Steve would love to have more books to help him pass the time. Remember - books must be sent to Steve directly from the publisher or bookstore (no used books), and hardback books will not be accepted. Amazon, AK Press, Barnes and Noble, and Microcosm Publishing are all examples of places on-line from which you can send Steve reading material. You will need his full address - including his booking number.
-Come to sentencing. This is perhaps the most important way you can support Steve. Standing in a courtroom alone can be a very scary experience. It would be wonderful if we could pack the courtroom with supporters so Steve will know he's not alone. If at all possible, please plan on coming to Steve's sentencing. Sentencing is currently set for April 5. The hearing will be at the Courthouse located at: 312 N. Spring St. in Los Angeles. Courtroom #8 (Judge Manuel Real). We will update you about the time as the hearing gets closer. Please stay tuned!
Thanks to you all,
Steve's Support Crew

This is a hard time for Steve please write him.

As of today, Steve has been in custody for 2 months and 19 days. He is still at the Central Detention Center of the San Bernardino County Jail. Two motions have been submitted by Steve's attorney on his behalf and the government recently requested additional time to respond. The government's responses to the motions are due by December 21 and the defendants reply is due by January 4, 2010. The final hearing on the motions is set for January, 11. Steve's trial date was originally set for January 12, 2010, but a recent motion to extend has been filed and approved for February 9th. Again, none of these dates are set in stone and, as they tend to do, they can and will change frequently.
Steve continues to maintain his innocence. His attorney has hired a private investigator and a DNA expert. If you have any information that might be helpful for Steve's case, please let us know so we can put you in touch with his attorney.
Phone calls are extremely expensive and these expenses are adding up quickly. In addition, Steve's girlfriend lives in Texas and traveling to visit Steve is a huge expense. All indications lead to the unfortunate probability that she will have to travel several more times before an outcome is reached - which even then is only the beginning. These phone calls and visits are incredibly important to Steve and help him keep his spirits up in a horribly dark time.
Please consider giving a donation atsupportsteve.org to help Steve and his partner defray these costs - perhaps in honor of a loved one, a perfect gift. While people are celebrating the holiday season, Steve will be alone. Even if you can't give monetary support, please keep writing Steve and all political prisoners during this difficult time. Letters are a lifeline to folks who are so physically cut off from their communities and loved ones. You can write Steve at:
MURPHY, STEVE JAMES
0910300841
CENTRAL DETENTION CENTER
630 EAST RIALTO AVE
SAN BERNARDINO, CA 92408
All incoming and outgoing mail is read by the authorities. Please
remember that, even if unsolicited, mail can still result in sanctions against a prisoner. When writing Steve, please do not talk about his case or anything related to it. For a list of mail restrictions, visit: http://supportsteve.org/info.htm
We'll keep you updated as things progress. Thank you all for your continued support.
Peace, love, and solidarity,
supportsteve team

Steve was denied bail on Thursday at his hearing though him and his attorney are in discussion about appealing the decision. His Lawyer is also working trying to have him moved to better accommodate his vegan diet.
We we're told he has a court date on Monday 10-26. No more information is available at this time.

*Last minute change in court date
**Minor change in address
*Due to a clerk error Steve was not moved to court for his bail hearing on Wednesday the 21st. His court date was moved till tomorrow, Thursday the 22nd at 3pm the same time.
COURT DATE: Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 3 p.m.
Edward R. Roybal Federal Building & U.S.Courthouse
255 E Temple St, Los Angeles 90012
Magistrate Judge Andrew J. Wistrich
Court Room # 690
Please make sure you dress appropriately for court. Steve's freedom is at stake, and unfortunately, what we do could impact that.
**A discrepancy was found in his zip code with what is on the prison's website. After investigation we found that both zip codes work, the old 92415 and the new 92408. The prison said that the olny difference is that they get mail 6 days a week at 92408 and only 5 days at 92415. It is speculated that the prison is a large facility that is on both sides of the zip code line.

Steve Murphy was recently arrested in Texas and charged with an alleged ELF action that occurred in California in September of 2006 (to read the complaint). He was recently extradited to California and is currently in San Bernardino County Jail. This puts Steve very far from many of his loved ones. It is hard enough to face this physical separation during such tumultuous times, but now Steve also has to attend court hearings in a place that many of his loved ones will be unable to reach. It is incredibly important that Steve see friendly faces in the courtroom. If you are in the LA area, please attend Steve's bail hearing on Wednesday, October 21st. Here are the details:

ALSO – Steve has asked that people STOP calling the jail to request vegan food for him. It seems that the issue is being worked out with jail staff, and we don't want to jeopardize a precarious situation. Thank you to everyone who called! Your efforts helped secure Steve a bit moreaccess to food he can eat.

Please cease calls to the jail for the time being regarding vegan food. Thanks.

Also, Steve has requested for people to call the jail and ask them to provide him with vegan food. He has been swapping food with other prisoners, but is still not receiving a proper vegan diet.

Currently, Steve is being held in Texas and awaiting transfer to California. His expected extradition date is sometime in the third week of October.
Steve is a vegan, and is having difficulty with food in the jail where he is being held in Ft Worth, TX. In a phone call, he reported he had so far had only one meal of pasta and iceberg lettuce at the jail. He has asked the no calls be made on his behalf just yet while he attempts to remedy the situation from the inside. However, calls to the jail may be needed in the near future to secure Steve a vegan diet.
Until then, write Steve a letter:
