Everyone Looks a Little Bit Asian

Sharron Angle's recent confusing remarks about race and ethnicity serve a unique purpose.

A/V Booth

There’s nothing unfair, disrespectful or manipulative about what the MSNBC host does here. She simply asks these Joe Miller supporters in Alaska to explain why they’re so upset and ... they can’t.

Sharron Angle, tea party favorite and sophisticated analyst of American racial politics, has lodged a complaint with Nevada’s attorney general, accusing her Senate rival, Harry Reid, of plying voters with goodies to get their support.

Jon Stewart was respectful but tough as the president defended his accomplishments and made the case for his party. Highlight of the night: President Obama said “Larry Summers did a heckuva job ...” to which Stewart replied, “You don’t want to use that phrase, dude.”

In a traditional democracy, the liberal class functions as a safety valve. It makes piecemeal and incremental reform possible. It offers hope for change and proposes gradual steps toward greater equality. But the assault by the corporate state on the democratic state has claimed the liberal class as one of its victims.

Other sources may disagree, but the word around the White House on Thursday was that President Obama’s special appearance on “The Daily Show” the night before had been “a success,” according to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

The Questions Education Reformers Aren’t Asking

Mike Rose notes that no one in power is asking fundamental questions about the purpose of education and whether much-hyped reforms might do more harm than good.

With their “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” this weekend, political satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are late to the party. This weird campaign has been Comedy Central all along.

What could cause the intensifying politics of free-market fundamentalism at the very historical moment that proves the failure of such an ideology? Two new academic studies suggest all roads lead to ignorance.

If Anita Hill told the truth—and I believe she did—then Clarence Thomas lied repeatedly and under oath.

Why Sarah Palin is no grizzly and how she and her sister travelers will wipe out the real thing.

In New York, there is a traditional name for the kind of anonymous cash now cascading into the American electoral process.

If there is one candidate who truly wishes that Christine O’Donnell had not won the Republican senatorial nomination in Delaware, it is the Republican Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, Pat Toomey.

Sharron Angle’s recent confusing remarks about race and ethnicity serve a unique purpose. They provide an opportunity to open dialogue in a campaign season that has been more focused on economics than on ethnicity. Could it be that the two are connected?

Excuse me, Mary Fallin, did I just hear you say, “Woman up”?

If 24 percent of respondents ages 14-17 tell an Associated Press-MTV poll they’ve done naked sexting, you can imagine the implications for professional athletes.

It’s over for the U.S. in Afghanistan, but that doesn’t mean the death and destruction are about to stop. Quagmires don’t just go away. However, the signs are everywhere that the American course in that nation is doomed.

Ear to the Ground

Fearing a win by tea party wunderkind Marco Rubio, Bill Clinton asked his friend Kendrick Meek, the Democrat in the race, to drop out and endorse Republican Gov. Charlie Crist’s independent bid. Meek almost agreed, but ultimately decided to stick it out, according to reports. (continued)

Three of four tests showed that the cement mixture used by Halliburton in the construction of BP’s ill-fated oil well in the Gulf was unstable, but the mixture was used anyway, a presidential commission investigating the disaster has found. The only successful test, which BP did not know about, has since come under suspicion.

Looks like Osama bin Laden is still around after all. The French Foreign Ministry said Thursday that video footage showing a man appearing to be bin Laden and threatening repercussions against France for recent actions he finds objectionable ... (continued)

Alaskan underdog and U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller scored a startling victory over incumbent Lisa Murkowski in August’s Republican primary, but in political time during an election year, August was eons ago, and now Miller needs another boost from ... (continued)

Palin

According to Sarah Palin, it’s still too early in the presidential election cycle for her to say for sure whether she’ll be putting the White House in her cross hairs for 2012. We’re not sure about that, but, regardless, Palin says she’ll take on the challenge if there’s “nobody willing to do it.”

On Wednesday, two days after an earthquake-triggered tsunami hit the shores of Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands, local officials reported problems with an alert system that should have warned islanders of the incoming tidal wave.

In campaigns around the country, Democratic candidates and committees are advertising on behalf of more extreme independent opponents in the hopes of dividing the Republican vote, Politico reports.
