The Strategic Defence Review must include Trident replacement

The new Conservative Defence Secretary Liam Fox has stated 'we need to move on from the cold war' in the new Strategic Defence and Security Review. However he has also stated that our Trident nuclear weapon system - perhaps the greatest symbol of the cold war arms race - will be excluded from the review and its future assured. This decision shows nothing has changed. Tory pro-nuclear policy holds sway. We are yet to see any 'new politics' on Trident replacement and its down to you to tell him times have changed. Where the Liberal Democrats sit on this is unclear. They had a sensible election position of including Trident in the defence review and considering all options, including non-replacement. We need to tell Nick Harvey, the Liberal Democrat Defence Minister to keep making that case. Write to them now.

I am writing to urge you to reconsider your decision to exclude Trident from the Strategic Defence and Security Review. Whilst I welcome your statement that 'we need to move on from the cold war' there is nothing more symbolic of the cold war than nuclear weapons. Similarly you assert that the military must 'change in light of the threats the country faces,' and that 'you don't simply say you're going to rule out x, y or z in advance.' It is therefore difficult to understand your conclusion that we should not consider the role of nuclear weapons in the UK's future defence strategy. Not only do I urge you to reconsider your decision to exclude Trident from the Review, I would like to know what process will be put in place to ensure Liberal Democrat 'alternatives', as highlighted in the coalition agreement, will be considered by the government. If this government really does support the 'new politics' it professes to it must not stifle a national debate on nuclear weapons and Trident replacement.
