Apparently, this is Drew Barrymore's grandma!

Whooooaaa ... if only the irritating Drew looked a fraction as good!

Art of the Cover - Galaxie 500's "This Is Our Music" (1991)

A stone-cold modern motherf*cking classic! ... Great cover art too.

Sadly though, the swan-song from the seminal band.

I first got my mitts on a version of this when this way in the day when this guy I useta know in college - a yuppie rich kid type! - who had a box of albums left by some departed room-mate. Anyway, he gave me this Galaxie 500 album on cassette (yap, it was a long ime ago!) saying something like ... "I listened to some of this shit and I don't know what the f*ck it is! Seems like a joke! .... Sounds like something you'd like!" ... And the douche was right!

This great album was reissued and remastered earlier this year with bonus tracks including a few fantastic out- takes from thissession, including the Young Marble Giants’ "Final Day" and a ripping leap through the Velvets’ "Here She ComesNow," as well as a cover of the Rutles’ classic "Cheese & Onions," recorded for a Rutles tribute record assembled byKramer.

Forget that David Blaine bullshit, this is what I call a real trick!!

The Video - Julie Doiron & The Wooden Stars' "Dance Music"

A real nice promo for "Dance Music" by indie sweetheart, canny canuck cutie Julie Doiron along with the Wooden Stars from some years back.

Julie collaborated with the Stars - the first time Doiron had collaborated with a band since the demise of the legendary Eric's Trip - back in 1999, to produce a very fine collection. One that includes the gorgeous piece of languid dream pop (a genre not normally associated with Julie) that is "Dance Music."

The "Julie Doiron & The Wooden Stars" album won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year in 2000. Why they named such an award after a crap, over-rated, Diablo Cody flick is way  beyond me though!

The Curio - Meditating KOMUSO monks in Tokyo (early 20th Century)

Meditating KOMUSO monks 虚無僧 こむそう; who are members of a Fuke 普化禪 sect of ZEN of Buddhism which all but died out in 1871 but still has a handful of modern followers.

You may have seen them in Japanese movies or in some Japanese festivals wearing their characteristic straw basket head wear (a sedge or reed hood named a tengai) and playing the shakuhachi 尺八 (しゃくはち (a type of Japanese bamboo flute)

The Komuso monks go from from house to house begging for alms in exchange for a “blessing” to rid the house of (or protect it from) evil.

Following the Meiji restoration, the new government of Japan banned the practice of Fuke Zen and playing the shakuhachi for religious reasons because in practice many spies, informers, samurai, ninja, thieves and gangsters disguised themselves as Komuso monks to avoid detection or cause trouble.
