Rights for working Australians is key issue for 2010 election
The 2010 election will be a referendum on the rights of people to have job security and decent working conditions. Working Australians have a clear choice between the Coalition which brought in WorkChoices and Labor which restored rights and protected jobs during the Global Financial Crisis.
New ACTU President Ged Kearney takes office
Ged Kearney is the new President of the ACTU. She replaces Sharan Burrow, who has been elected General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation. Ms Kearney is a former nurse who brings to the ACTU a wealth of campaigning experience to drive the union agenda for a better life for Australian workers.
Paid parental leave scheme passes through senate
Australian working mothers will have better health and financial security after the historic passage of the first national paid parental leave scheme. The passing of the Bill by the Senate was the culmination of a 30-year campaign by working women and their unions.
Unions win $26 a week wage rise
More than 1.4 million Australians on award wages will get a $26 a week pay rise from 1 July, after suffering a wage freeze of almost two years under the former Liberal Government’s WorkChoices pay commission.
Mining companies must pay their fair share
We can only sell our natural resources once and so it's essential that all Australians benefit. The Minerals Resource Rent Tax will make our tax system fairer, strengthen the national economy and help fund an increase in superannuation for working Australians.
