About the cartoonist

David has been drawing cartoons for the alternative press in Australia since the mid-1980s, under the pen name Hinze. Since March 2008 he has been drawing editorial cartoons for The Canberra Times, following the retirement of the paper's much loved cartoonist Geoff Pryor after a 30-year career.

Before The Canberra Times, David was the editorial cartoonist for The Sun-Herald. His work has appeared in The Republican, The Northern Rivers Echo, The Diplomat, The New Doctor, Overland, Arena, and various trade union newspapers, including Common Cause, Hard Hat, The Queensland Nurse and The AEU News.

David has received five "Stanley" Awards for Media Art from his peers in the Australian Cartoonists Association, and six Rotary National Cartoon Awards. He has also received four Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards from the UN Correspondents Association, a Prodi journalism award for his political cartoons in the The Northern Rivers Echo, and has been a finalist at the Walkley Journalism Awards three times.
