If we’re trying to make a case that arts cuts are damaging to society then we need to make that case top society. If we want public support for arts funding then we have to make the public see why it’s worth supporting. That doesn’t mean being populist or relevant or spectacular or whatever bullshit metric is put forward. It means producing the sort of art that makes people sit up and take notice. The sort of art that, when people see it, they will demand more of.
SHOUT, Birmingham’s queer cultural festival – With events and exhibitions in venues across Birmingham next month, SHOUT will be venturing into Digbeth for exhibitions such as Milk, visual artist Dan Auluk’s response to the feature film Milk (2008) and Women Photographers! – ‘a first exciting exhibition by a newly formed group of Birmingham based QLGBT women photographers’ in The Works gallery on Pershore Street.
Moseley School of Art is one of of the 10 most endangered Victorian Buildings in England and Wales | Birmingham Conservation Trust – More Moseley Road woes. The BBC reported that the Former Moseley School of Art (opposite Moseley Road Baths in Balsal Heath) is on the Victorian Societies list of the 10 most endangered Victorian buildings in England and Wales. The list was drawn up using nominations from members of the public. Be sure to look hard out of the window next time you catch the 50 bus – the buildings you pass along the way may not be there for long.
These free presentations will be dedicated to people who would like to get into cycling, but don’t know where to start.
The presentations will offer advice on choosing your bike, the difference between frame sizes, tyres and gears and how to carry out basic checks and adjustments. They will also discuss safe road cycling, ‘Bikeability’ and using road features such as bike lanes and advanced stop lines.
