STUDIO4 GALLERY: storm in a tea cup – There’s a new show coming to the gallery in the Custard Factory of artist Chris Bourke’s prints. Starting Monday 26th April until Saturday 29th May. The opening reception is Thursday 29th from 6.30 to 9pm, which seems to be an open invitation thing.
Crass played at Digbeth Civic Hall seven times: twice in 1980, twice in 1981, once in 1982, once in 1983 and once in 1984.
I went to all of those dates: the first time I saw them was the February 1980 concert…I still have a ticket and poster for this somewhere!
They also played Birmingham before in 1979 at the Co-Op Festival Suite but I missed that one.
The early concerts were organised by people affiliated to the 021 Birmingham Anarchist group and the Peace Centre.
My memories of the concerts at Digbeth seem to be considerably different to other people, for example, I don’t really remember any aggro, although others do…
They were great concerts though, very inspiring, particularly for the way the evening was a ‘multi-media’ extravaganza which seemed to make it something special beyiond the usual rock ‘n’ roll concert…
As you’ll have seen, Carl has posted some exciting news about a new convenience store with a free-to-use cashpoint near the Birmingham Coach Station on Digbeth High Street. The Shopkeeper himself has commented, saying the store will open 22 April, the cash machine will be installed in the next two weeks and ‘Digbeth just got better!’
The Shopkeeper is none other than Michael, who emailed me these couple of images which show what the front of the store will look like.
It seems Michael is well up for an opening ceremony for the ATM. I spy a very special party – I wonder if The Anchor can lay on a special Cashpoint real ale?
Fifteen years down the line and finally the Custard Factory’s infamous Factory Club closes it’s doors, will they be putting on their slippers and shuffling off into the sunrise glow sticks a fading?, Unlikely…
“There’s only one way to end this… after 15 years of the most forward thinking music events Birmingham has ever seen…. On a high note! Is it time to get our hopes up once again? Walking past the small row of shops next to Digbeth Coach Station this morning I noticed that two of the shops are being refurbished into one.. this is good news, but look here:
That green sign says: “Free To Use Cashpoint, Coming Soon”
It’s very possible that could actually be a Natwest branch of bank being opened there. Anyway, I hope I am right; I do have a history of getting your hopes up. :-)
Update: The Shopkeeper has replied to this very post with more information. It sounds very exciting. See here.
The current newsagent which is located a few doors away will be relocating into the new site and converting into a Convenience Store. We will be providing an improved retail offer which will include a Free to Use ATM in conjunction with Nat West – the contract with the supplier is signed and sealed, the machine will be installed in the next two weeks.

I recently had a little chat with Zafar Majid, the man behind the new Digbeth Court development currently under construction next to The Rainbow on Digbeth High Street. The development grew out of Zafar’s search for a new home for his telecommunications company Alphatalk. Alphatalk will occupy a small section of the building, with the rest being available as serviced offices and workshops for small businesses and some retail units on the ground floor.
As a Digbeth resident I’m particularly excited about Zafar’s plans for a good convenience store in the development! Zafar also said he will endevour to get a cashpoint on the premises. If you think you might be interested in renting a space in Digbeth Court call Zafar on 0845 021 2000.
