Tunnel of Love

The architect Clifford Milburn Holland began construction on his eponymous tunnel 90 years ago this week. With the fate of a potential new tunnel resting in Governor Christie’s hands, tunnels, bridges and commuting in general are on our mind in today’s FUV Q of the D.

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2010

Sold out for three days (that’s 100,000 tickets PER DAY). Perfect weather, awesome city, it was amazing and a testament to the music and artists that WFUV and The Alternate Side strive to bring daily. My 2 cents from 2 days of Festival.

Bands I had not heard of but loved: Band of Heathens, Beats Antique, Dough Rollers, The Jane Spencers
Bands I knew, but misjudged before and really enjoyed: Kinky, Nortec Collective, Matt & Kim
Bands I knew well and was sooo happy to see: Phish, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Ozomatli, Monsters of Folk, the xx, M.I.A., Broken Bells
Bands that underwhelmed me: Slightly Stoopid, Muse, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Deadmau5
Bands I am really mad I am missing from day 3: The National, Band of Horses, Edward Sharpe, Martin Sexton, Norah Jones
Best festival food: Definitely, Fried Avocado cone from The Mighty Cone
Best mode of Austin transportation: Pedicabs. Our driver, Aaron was from New Zealand and if you ask him, he will blow the conch shell for you he wears.
Best downtown Austin late night food truck: Coreanos (Mexican/Korean fusion, www.coreanostx.com). OMG!!!
Favorite airport moment: In the Austin airport in the food section I was simultaneously within 5 feet of both Alejandro Escavedo (did not play ACL but lives in Austin and was on his way out of town) and Broken Bells (played ACL and was on their way out of town). They didn’t even see each other. Do they even know each other. Danger Mouse was enjoying some last minute Texas BBQ before boarding.
Things that bummed me out at little: This year more than in the past, the sound from the stages bled into each others and it was very hard to listen to some of the music. For example, Monsters of Folk was on a smaller stage than they needed for their crowd.

It’s a great festival. C3 Presents, the promoter and producer (they also do Lollapalooza) puts on a great show and Austin as a city it a great host.

Check wufv.org for pictures from the fun.

The King of Rock and Soul

So bummed to hear of the passing of a legend. Solomon Burke died today at the age of 70 leaving behind a legacy that most artists can only dream of.  I’ll always remember sitting down with the big man at WFUV a few years back.  He was warm and easy going, the most welcoming of men. He made you feel like a friend, not a fan. One of things we talked about during that session was the type of venture he would attempt if he had the time or guts.  His response?  Paraphrasing here, “I’d open up a chain of drive thru mortuaries.”

Rest in Peace, King Solomon.

You can hear that session from 2007 here.

Gorrilaz on Letterman

Gorrilaz were fully animated last night as they performed a 45 minute webcast for David Letterman’s Late Show.
The show opened with a quick screen projection of the animated band tooling around their dressing room waiting for the “warm up band” to start playing.  Meanwhile, the living carnation of Gorrilaz were walking onstage.
As soon as Damon Albarn and crew launched into their 1st song, the atmosphere quickly turned from a talk show set to small club.
And everyone onstage seemed to be having as much fun as those in the audience.  The simply irresistible Robert Palmer looking female string section busted out some pretty fly dance moves as they played as did frontman Damon Albarn while guests like De La Soul and Bootie Brown (Pharcyde) ran on and off stage to join in.
The show ended w/ the band being joyfully bumrushed on stage by fans.
During the show, Damon Albarn says, “I’m looking forward to Tomorrow Night. (10/8/10 – when Gorrilaz play Madison Square Garden) In fact, I’ve been looking forward to tomorrow night all my life.”
If you were’nt lucky enough to nab yourself a ticket to their big gig @ MSG, take solace in watching the webcast of their Letterman set here:
