Ladyboy Babies Go Butch II

September 25, 2010 – 10:00 am -

The original, and undeniably one of the best, René-Charles Dion-Angélil apparently never had his hair cut until he was aged around 8 years old. Instead it grew and grew like Rapunzel. Obviously the mistakes were getting too embarrassing for him, so he’s gone for a nice, boy-at-boarding school do.

3 O’Clock Surprise Song

September 24, 2010 – 3:00 pm -

A bit of a modern one here -- we need a break from all that ’80s stuff -- from 2010 in fact (well the film is at least).  The track’s called ‘Pinball’ and it’s by Akira Kiteshi:

Ladyboy Babies Go Butch

September 24, 2010 – 12:00 pm -

Last year, if you were an A-List celebrity, it was all the rage to make your son look like a pretty little girl. Now it seems that the poor victims in all of this have grown up and will no longer take style tips from their bonkers parents.

First to have grown some stones – Presley Walker Gerber:

3 O’Clock Surprise Song

September 22, 2010 – 3:00 pm -

As it was the anniversary of Patrick Swayze’s death last week, we went on a bit of a nostalgic trip through his best movies and as a result, were reminded of this gem from Road House:

Trivia time:  The late Jeff Healey (of the Jeff Healey band -- the guys that performed this song -- ‘When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky’) was blind.  But that didn’t stop him from playing the guitar bloody amazingly, and to prove it, we’ve included a clip from Road House (don’t watch if you haven’t seen Road House though, because it’s right at the end -- but then again, if you haven’t seen Road House, then, well, you should probably go and punch yourself in the neck or something):

Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. Died Yesterday.

September 22, 2010 – 9:54 am -

Leonard Skinner, the high school gym teacher that Lynyrd Skynyrd named the band after, died yesterday. Leonard apparently rigidly enforced the school rule that boys couldn’t have long hair, so Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and Gary Rossington were often in trouble with him.

The band and Leonard eventually became friends, and when he left teaching and became a real estate agent, the band used a photo of his sign “Leonard Skinner Realty” on an album cover. Aged 77, suffering from Alzheimer’s, Leonard Skinner was described by the New York Times as “arguably the most influential high school gym teacher in American popular culture” (here).

Popbitch was lucky enough to hang out with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s later incarnation on their 1997 tour of Europe and drink a lot of Tennessee whiskey with them. There was a particularly poignant moment at the Royal Albert Hall just after Diana died when pictures of the dead princess and their dead band members (from a plane crash in 1997 -- see here) were slowly unveiled, as the band (supported by Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson and the amazing LA rock band Tribe of Gypsies) played a blistering version of Free Bird. We can’t bring you that version but it seems that song is a fitting tribute for Leonard too.

3 O’Clock Surprise Song

September 21, 2010 – 3:00 pm -

Unpleasant film -- pleasant song.  It’s played when everything is all happy and dandy at the beginning before the shit hits the outboard murder, so it’s still an upbeat one.  Here we go:

It’s Rex the Dog’s remix of The Knife -- ‘Heartbeats’ and we sodding well like it.  Probably even more than Jose Gonzalez’s version -- the one you all heard on that advert for bouncy balls.
